Sunfyre’s fate after the Battle of Rook’s Rest has remained one of House of the Dragon’s biggest mysteries. The brutal clash in Season 2 claimed the lives of Princess Rhaenys Targaryen and her dragon, Meleys, while also leaving King Aegon II Targaryen and his beloved dragon, Sunfyre, gravely injured after Aemond Targaryen and Vhagar turned on them.
While Aegon spent months recovering in King’s Landing, Sunfyre’s whereabouts were barely talked about, leading many to assume the magnificent golden dragon had died. However, Season 3, Episode 4 finally answers that question – and the truth is more heartbreaking than many expected.
When Aegon reunites with his dragon
After escaping King’s Landing with Larys Strong in the Season 2 finale, Aegon eventually makes his way to Rook’s Rest in the latest episode. There, he is finally reunited with Sunfyre, who still lies motionless where he crashed during the battle.
The emotional sequence shows Aegon desperately trying to wake his dragon, refusing to accept that his closest companion may never fly again. The episode surely paints a devastating picture of the dragon’s condition months after the battle.
Sunfyre’s suffering has become a tourist attraction
As heartbreaking as the reunion is, the episode delivers an even sadder revelation. Rather than leaving the fallen dragon in peace, settlers living around Rook’s Rest have turned the spot where Sunfyre fell into a grim attraction, charging curious visitors for the chance to get close to the legendary beast.
One of the settlers even tells Aegon and Larys, “It’s a penny to touch the dragon.”
In the behind-the-scenes featurette for the latest episode, cinematographer Alejandro Martínez described the unsettling scene.
“This place has, strangely enough, become a post-apocalyptic tourist attraction.”
Tom Glynn-Carney, who plays King Aegon II Targaryen, also explained how deeply the discovery affects his character.
“A group of settlers had started using Sunfyre as a means to make money. Aegon’s not happy about that at all. He’s not happy at all, really, this season.”
Sunfyre was once celebrated as the most beautiful dragon in Westeros, with golden scales said to shimmer brilliantly in the sunlight. Seeing the mighty dragon lying helpless while strangers profit from his suffering adds another layer of tragedy to Aegon’s journey and makes one of House of the Dragon Season 3’s most emotional scenes even more poignant.
