Some people fight cancer with medicine. Others survive because a song gives them the strength to face one more day. For Bunnia Greenwood, that voice belonged to Randy Travis. Through multiple cancer diagnoses, long hospital stays, and days when hope felt painfully out of reach, his music became the hand she could hold. She never imagined she’d actually meet the man whose songs had carried her through so much. Believing she was only receiving a signed poster, Bunnia was stunned when Randy, accompanied by his wife Mary Davis, quietly walked into her hospital room. Tears came instantly. Though Randy has spoken only sparingly since his 2013 stroke, he didn’t need words to remind her she wasn’t alone. In that quiet embrace between a hero and a fan, strangers became family—and one unforgettable act of kindness touched far more hearts than either of them could ever know.

As the saying goes, “Don’t meet your heroes…”

Unless, of course, that hero is Randy Travis.

Recently, a woman battling cancer had the privilege of meeting the man behind the music she loved, as Randy surprised her in her hospital room.

This special moment was captured on video, and it could lift just about anyone’s spirits.

Bunnia Greenwood is a cancer patient at City of Hope Chicago, a center that specializes in cancer care.

“Throughout multiple cancer diagnoses and years of treatment, Bunnia has faced every chapter with remarkable strength and resilience,” City of Hope Chicago wrote on its Instagram. “On hard days and good days alike, the music of country legend [Randy Travis] has kept her spirit lifted and her heart full.”

Continuing, the City of Hope Chicago wrote, “A longtime and devoted fan, [Bunnia] had always dreamed of meeting Randy in person. With the love and determination of her family and friends, that dream became a reality when he visited her at City of Hope Chicago.”

On July 31, Randy Travis, with the help of his wife Mary Davis Travis, visited Bunnia in her hospital room. This was captured on video, and powerfully shows the significance of a small gesture like visiting someone in a hospital.

The meeting began as a surprise, with Bunnia thinking she would only be receiving a large signed poster of Randy. Even with just that, she appeared overjoyed, but the day didn’t stop there.

Mary Davis then helped bring Randy into Bunnia’s hospital room.

While Randy struggles to speak — a symptom of his 2013 aphasia diagnosis that followed a stroke — his face said it all. Even before he lowered his medical mask, his eyes were already lit up with joy.

Lowering his mask, Bunnia was moved to tears.

“Thank you so much,” Bunnia said to Randy. “I have been a fan of yours for years.”

City of Hope Chicago wrote of the experience, “Their time together was filled with warmth, connection and the kind of joy that words cannot fully capture.”

Concluding its post, City of Hope Chicago wrote, “We are deeply grateful to Randy and his wife, [Mary Davis], for helping create such a meaningful moment for a cherished member of our City of Hope community.”
