Absolutely Chilling… Netflix has unveiled a disturbing new look at its latest true-crime series — but one unexpected moment at the very end has fans convinced something much bigger is being teased.

Netflix’s Lizzie Borden Trailer Sparks Theory About Monster’s Next Season

Netflix has given fans another unsettling glimpse at Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, and one brief moment at the end of the trailer has already sparked speculation about where the anthology could go next.

The new season comes from Ryan Murphy, whose other credits include American Horror Story and The Beauty and All’s Fair. As with previous instalments of the Monster anthology, the story turns its attention to a notorious true crime case.

Previous seasons have explored the crimes of Jeffrey Dahmer, Erik and Lyle Menendez, and Ed Gein. This time, the focus shifts to Lizzie Borden, who was accused of killing her father and stepmother with a hatchet in 1892.

The latest trailer offers a grim look at the events surrounding the infamous case and gives viewers a closer look at the cast.

Ella Beatty takes on the role of Lizzie Borden

Ella Beatty, the daughter of Hollywood stars Annette Bening and Warren Beatty, plays Lizzie Borden.

Charlie Hunnam also appears as Borden’s father. Hunnam previously featured in the anthology as Ed Gein.

The trailer also introduces Vicky Krieps in a particularly unusual role. She plays both the family’s housemaid and Elizabeth Bathory, another alleged serial killer.

In the footage, Krieps appears to speak with Elizabeth and encourage Lizzie to murder her parents.

Krieps previously played Ilse Koch in The Ed Gein Story, where her character was portrayed as an influential figure for the central character.

The final scene has fans looking ahead

The biggest talking point from the trailer comes in its closing moments.

The scene appears to take place long after the events of the Borden killings. A cardboard cutout of Beatty as Lizzie Borden can be seen in the background, suggesting that the sequence may be set inside the actual Borden house.

The property has since become a place that members of the public can visit and is still described as the most haunted house in the United States.

Sarah Paulson then takes centre stage as Aileen Wuornos, the serial killer who murdered seven men between 1989 and 1990.

Wuornos’ crimes have previously been explored in documentaries and feature films. One of those films was also titled Monster, released in 2003 and starring Charlize Theron as Wuornos.

Could Aileen Wuornos be the next Monster?

Paulson’s appearance has led some viewers to wonder whether Netflix is quietly hinting at the subject of the anthology’s fifth season.

Fans quickly began speculating that Wuornos and her crimes could become the focus of a future instalment.

One viewer wrote: “Can’t wait!! So excited. Oh is the ending on the teaser of the next monster? I feel like it is!!”

Another appeared convinced, commenting: “Oh, I know what series they’re definitely doing next with Sarah Paulson.”

The trailer also received plenty of praise from viewers who were already impressed by its dark tone.

“This looks absolutely chilling,” one fan wrote.

Another added: “Hmm this looks horrific and I am liking it!”

A third viewer praised the show’s approach to historical crime, saying: “Netflix really knows how to make historical true crime feel terrifying. This one looks seriously dark.”

Netflix has since confirmed through a social media post that Paulson is playing Wuornos. However, it remains unclear how prominently she will feature in the series or whether the character’s appearance could be setting up a future instalment.

Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story begins streaming on Netflix on September 17.
