Bruce Springsteen Sends a Heartfelt Message to His Ancestral Hometown in Ireland

Bruce Springsteen has sent a warm message across the Atlantic to residents of Rathangan, Ireland, a town with a special connection to his family history.

The New Jersey rock legend recorded a video greeting for the community as Rathangan hosted Féile Springsteen, a cultural festival celebrating the ancestral ties between the Irish town and Springsteen’s hometown of Freehold, New Jersey.

“Sending all my love”

In the message, Springsteen congratulated the community on the formal connection between Rathangan and Freehold, as well as the planting of two copper beech trees intended to symbolize the bond between the two places.

He told residents that he hoped they would have a wonderful celebration and added that he hoped to visit again soon.

The video was shown at The Village Pump, a pub in Rathangan, on August 22, as locals gathered for an event featuring performances by The Human Touch, a band known for covering Springsteen’s music.

A connection that goes back generations

The connection between Springsteen and Rathangan is rooted in his family ancestry.

Earlier this summer, members of Springsteen’s family helped plant a copper beech tree at the Monmouth County Historical Association in Freehold as part of the effort to connect the New Jersey community with Rathangan.

The gesture also carries a symbolic link to Springsteen family history. A copper beech tree once stood outside a Springsteen family home on Randolph Street in Freehold for more than a century.

For Springsteen, whose music has long drawn heavily on ideas of family, home and working-class roots, the connection offers a personal link between the New Jersey town that shaped him and the Irish community connected to his ancestors.

A celebration of shared roots

Féile Springsteen was more than simply a festival celebrating the singer’s music. It highlighted the shared history between Rathangan and Freehold, bringing together music, local culture and family heritage.

Springsteen may have built his career on stages around the world, but his message to Rathangan showed that the connection to his family’s roots remains meaningful.

And for the people of the small Irish town, hearing directly from one of America’s most famous rock stars made the celebration all the more special.
