Florence Pugh Takes Center Stage in Netflix’s East of Eden Adaptation
Netflix has unveiled the first images from East of Eden, giving viewers their first proper glimpse of Florence Pugh as Cathy Ames in its highly anticipated new adaptation of John Steinbeck’s classic novel.
The seven-episode limited series has been in the works since it was first announced in 2022. Now, with its October release approaching, the newly released images offer an early look at a sweeping family drama that promises to put one of Steinbeck’s most fascinating and troubling characters firmly at the heart of the story.
Based on Steinbeck’s 1952 novel, East of Eden follows generations of the Trask and Hamilton families in California’s Salinas Valley, spanning the period before, during and after the turn of the 20th century.
While the original story is a sweeping family saga, this adaptation shifts particular attention toward Cathy Ames, played by Pugh. Cathy is one of the novel’s most morally unsettling figures, and the series will explore her character, choices and motivations in greater depth.
A new perspective on a Steinbeck classic
The series comes from writer Zoe Kazan, whose previous work includes the 2012 film Ruby Sparks and a starring role in The Big Sick in 2017.
There is also a striking personal connection between Kazan and Steinbeck’s story. Her grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 film adaptation of East of Eden. Zoe Kazan’s decision to revisit the material therefore brings a family connection to a story that has already been part of her family’s cinematic history.
The new adaptation will consist of seven episodes, all arriving on Netflix on 1 October.
What is East of Eden about?
At its core, Steinbeck’s novel reimagines the biblical story of Cain and Abel while exploring a much broader question about human nature: are people born good or evil, or do they ultimately choose which path to follow?
That idea remains central to the Netflix adaptation, whose promotional message is: “You are what you choose.”
The story unfolds across several generations of the Trask and Hamilton families in California’s Salinas Valley. At the center are twin brothers Cal and Aron Trask, whose relationship echoes the biblical conflict between Cain and Abel.
Cal is complicated and rebellious, carrying a sense of inherited darkness and struggling to understand his place in the world. Aron, by contrast, is idealistic and presented as the more innocent, pure-hearted brother.
Their father is Adam Trask, while their mother, Cathy Ames, becomes one of the most important and disturbing figures in the family’s story.
Cathy’s life is closely connected to generations of men in the Trask family, and she functions as the story’s principal antagonist. Steinbeck uses her to embody a profound absence of morality, presenting the idea of evil without conscience.
But the new series appears interested in looking beyond that simple definition.
Rather than treating Cathy solely as an embodiment of evil, the adaptation will spend more time examining the decisions she makes and the forces that shape her. That could offer a more detailed portrait of a character who has long been one of the most controversial and memorable figures in Steinbeck’s work.
In the trailer, Pugh delivers a haunting reflection from Cathy:
“When I was a little girl, I imagined that I could grow smaller. So small that the bad things couldn’t find me, and I could disappear. Because the world is so full of evil.”
The line hints at a character whose relationship with evil may be more complicated than it first appears. It also sets the tone for what looks to be a dark, emotionally charged interpretation of the novel.
Florence Pugh leads an impressive cast
Pugh takes the central role of Cathy Ames, with a substantial ensemble joining her across the Trask and Hamilton families.
The cast includes Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask, Mike Faist as Charles Trask, Joseph Zada as Cal Trask and Joe Anders as Aron Trask.
Tracy Letts plays Cyrus Trask, while Martha Plimpton takes the role of Faye. Ciarán Hinds portrays Samuel Hamilton, and Hoon Lee plays Lee.
Newly released images show several of the principal cast members together, including Pugh alongside Abbott and Faist, as well as Hinds and Lee.
With Pugh at the center, the series looks set to make Cathy’s perspective a major part of its interpretation of Steinbeck’s story.
When does East of Eden arrive on Netflix?
There is not much longer to wait. Netflix will release all seven episodes of East of Eden on 1 October.
With its sprawling family story, dark themes and morally complicated characters, the series is shaping up to be a fitting autumn release. More importantly, the first-look images and teaser suggest that Florence Pugh’s Cathy Ames could become the defining presence of this new take on Steinbeck’s enduring story.
