Penny Lancaster became emotional while looking back at one of the most delicate challenges of her relationship with Rod Stewart: finding her place within the rock legend’s already large and complicated family.
Lancaster, 54, and Stewart, 80, reflected on their marriage and blended family during an appearance on the BBC’s Anita Rani’s My Life at Christmas.
The couple have been married since 2007, but their relationship began at a complicated point in Stewart’s personal life. He had separated from his second wife, Rachel Hunter, with whom he shares daughter Renee and son Liam, and was already a father to four other children.
For Lancaster, falling in love with Stewart therefore meant becoming part of a family filled with children of different ages and from different relationships.
Speaking about those early years brought her to tears.
Penny says she ‘tiptoed very lightly’ into Rod’s family

Lancaster recalled being extremely careful when she first began spending time with Stewart’s children.
“I tiptoed very lightly,” she said. “Because there were lots of personalities, and more importantly, there were children ranging from all ages.”
Liam, she recalled, was only five when she first met the family.
That made the situation particularly sensitive.
The children had different mothers, and Lancaster understood that entering their lives as their father’s new partner required patience rather than attempting to immediately establish a particular role.
Becoming a stepmother was completely unfamiliar territory.
“It was a scenario I had never faced before,” she explained.
She initially believed she needed to stay ‘in the background’

Rather than forcing relationships with Stewart’s children, Lancaster decided to give them space.
She remembered thinking that she needed to remain “in the background” while making sure the children knew she was available whenever they needed her.
Her approach was deliberately slow.
“I just wanted to take my time, and it took a long time,” Lancaster said as she again struggled to contain her emotions.
Years later, however, that patience has resulted in something she once struggled to imagine.
Lancaster said she and Stewart’s children have now “got to a place that I never thought I would get to with them.”
The admission showed just how much the relationships have evolved since she first cautiously entered the family.
Lancaster and Stewart eventually welcomed two children of their own, further expanding the singer’s blended family.
Their romance nearly didn’t get started
Lancaster and Stewart also revealed an unusual detail about the beginning of their relationship: they waited nine months after meeting before exchanging phone numbers.
That delay wasn’t accidental.
Stewart’s band leader, Carmine Appice, had Lancaster’s telephone number — but deliberately kept it away from Stewart.
According to Lancaster, Appice believed Stewart needed time after the breakdown of his previous marriage.
“He said, ‘You are going to go a bit crazy over the summer and let your hair down and Penny seems like a nice girl,’” she recalled.
Appice apparently wanted to prevent Lancaster from becoming involved with Stewart before the singer was emotionally ready for another serious relationship.
Rod admits his friend knew he wasn’t ready
Stewart now looks back on Appice’s intervention with gratitude rather than frustration.
“He was an absolute gentleman … he kept her telephone away from me,” the singer recalled.
Stewart acknowledged that he was in an uncertain place following the end of his marriage.
“He didn’t think I was in the right position because I had just got a divorce and didn’t know if I was coming or going,” he explained.
Appice eventually passed along Lancaster’s number once he believed Stewart was “ready.”
That delayed connection ultimately developed into a relationship that has lasted for decades.
The pair married in 2007 and have since built a family life together while maintaining relationships across Stewart’s larger blended family.
Rod Stewart reveals the rule that helps their marriage survive
The conversation became emotional for Stewart as well when he reflected on why his marriage to Lancaster has endured.
He credited their relationship with changing both of them.
“There is a maturity I may have taught Penny, and there is an honesty she has taught me,” Stewart said.
One of their most important rules, he explained, concerns how they handle disagreements.
“We do not argue before we go to bed and … if we do have arguments, it is over real quick.”
For Stewart, apologizing when necessary is also essential — something he says he has tried to teach all of his children.
“I try to teach my kids, all of them, that real men say sorry, that’s what they do.”
That willingness to admit mistakes appears to be central to the relationship he and Lancaster have built.
“There is a wonderful honesty between us,” Stewart added, “and long may it last.”
A blended family that took years to build
Lancaster’s emotional recollections reveal that becoming part of Stewart’s family was never something she expected to happen immediately.
She entered a household shaped by previous relationships, children of different ages and complicated emotions surrounding their parents.
Instead of demanding acceptance, she chose to wait.
She stayed close enough to be present while allowing Stewart’s children to decide how their relationship with her would develop.
More than two decades later, Lancaster can look at those relationships very differently.
The woman who once believed she needed to quietly remain “in the background” now says she has reached a place with her stepchildren that she never imagined possible.
And for Stewart, the marriage that began only after a friend decided he was finally ready remains built around one principle both husband and wife repeatedly returned to: honesty.
