Death of the Pastor’s Wife: The Mica Miller Case and the Abuse Allegations Behind Her Final Years

Netflix’s three-part documentary examines Mica Miller’s life, her troubled marriage to pastor John-Paul Miller, and the unanswered questions surrounding her death.

When Mica Miller was found dead at a North Carolina state park on April 27, 2024, authorities ruled her death a suicide. But the circumstances surrounding her final weeks raised questions that have continued to draw national attention.

A month before her death, Mica had told police she was afraid for her life and had described herself as the victim of a stalking situation. The person at the center of her fears was her husband, John-Paul Miller, the pastor of Solid Rock Church in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Now, Netflix’s three-part documentary series Death of the Pastor’s Wife revisits the years leading up to Mica’s death through personal recordings, home videos, church footage, journals and interviews with the people who knew her best. The series also examines allegations of emotional abuse and coercive control within her marriage and follows her family’s continuing search for answers.

The documentary premiered on Aug. 26, 2026, and is now streaming on Netflix.

A story told through Mica’s own life

Directed by Julia Willoughby Nason and Michael Gasparro, the filmmakers behind Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal and American Murder: Gabby Petito, the series places Mica’s own story at its center.

The directors say what stood out to them was how strongly Mica appeared to be trying to make herself heard. Rather than focusing solely on the circumstances of her death, they wanted to understand what she had experienced and give her family and friends room to describe the woman they knew.

Executive producer Alana Goldstein says the filmmakers came to know Mica through the people closest to her. Their stated aim was to create a personal portrait that honors Mica’s voice while examining emotional abuse and coercive control and remembering the importance of her faith.

Goldstein serves as executive producer alongside Tom Cappello and Keely Walker Muse of Crazy Legs Productions; Nason and Gasparro of The Cinemart; and Yotam Guendelman of Silvio Productions.

Who was Mica Miller?

Before her death, Mica was best known to her family for her singing.

Originally from Wichita, Kansas, she moved with her family to Myrtle Beach and became deeply involved in the church community there. She was one of six siblings and began serving as a worship leader while she was still a teenager.

Her brother Nate Francis remembers her as the strongest singer in the family.

“She loved singing,” he says in the series.

Friends and relatives describe Mica as confident and deeply committed to her faith. Those memories are an important part of the documentary, which seeks to present her as more than the circumstances of her death.

Mica first met John-Paul Miller when she was 13. Her family had begun attending Solid Rock Church, where Miller was pastor.

Their relationship would eventually become the defining relationship of her adult life.

Who was John-Paul Miller?

John-Paul Miller, known as JP, was the pastor of Solid Rock Church in Myrtle Beach. He was also a musician and was known for a direct, unconventional preaching style that attracted a devoted congregation.

Miller was 15 years older than Mica. The two eventually married in 2017, but their relationship had begun years earlier, while Miller was still married and Mica was working as his assistant.

When the affair became known, it caused a scandal within the church.

The marriage later deteriorated. Mica eventually decided she wanted to leave, but, according to the account presented in the documentary, getting away from the relationship proved difficult.

She served Miller with divorce papers in April 2024, just two days before her death.

Miller has not been charged in connection with Mica’s death. In December 2025, however, a federal grand jury indicted him on charges of cyberstalking and making false statements to investigators. He pleaded not guilty. As of August 2026, his trial is scheduled for October 2026. Miller declined to comment for the documentary.

The federal case concerns alleged conduct surrounding Mica before her death, rather than a charge that Miller caused her death. The indictment alleges a pattern of unwanted communications and other forms of electronic harassment.

The documentary follows Mica through her own archives

One of the series’ defining features is its use of material Mica left behind.

With permission from her family, the filmmakers accessed years of archival footage showing Mica growing up in the church, performing music and practicing her faith.

Nason says the filmmakers deliberately allowed much of that material to speak for itself. The footage provides a record of Mica at different stages of her life and helps establish the person she was before the story became dominated by allegations and questions surrounding her death.

Her journals offer an even more personal perspective.

The diaries reveal thoughts and experiences that were not necessarily visible to the people around her. The filmmakers incorporated those writings into the series to bring viewers closer to Mica’s private world.

The documentary uses voice recreation technology to read portions of the journals. Gasparro says the intention was to make the experience sound as close to Mica’s own voice as possible while keeping the focus on her words.

The directors previously used a similar approach on American Murder: Gabby Petito.

Who appears in Death of the Pastor’s Wife?

Much of the documentary’s perspective comes from Mica’s siblings and sister-in-law, the Francis family.

They experienced the events alongside Mica and remained involved as her relationship with Miller deteriorated. Close friends and former members of Solid Rock Church also appear, along with people who attempted to help Mica, including a biblical counselor and the attorney she retained during her divorce.

An investigative journalist also contributes to the series, examining the questions that emerged after Mica’s death.

The filmmakers interviewed more people than ultimately appeared in the finished documentary. Goldstein says many individuals wanted to tell Mica’s story or speak on her behalf, but the production ultimately decided that her siblings were the strongest way to tell it.

That choice also reflects how many people were affected by Mica’s life. Her family and friends describe a woman who had a wide community around her and left a strong impression on the people who knew her.

Gasparro says the story ultimately belongs to Mica and her siblings, while also acknowledging the church members and friends who accompanied her through the difficult final years of her life.

What happened to Mica Miller?

Mica was found dead on April 27, 2024, at a North Carolina state park. Her death was officially ruled a suicide.

The ruling did not end questions about what had happened in the period before her death.

Mica had previously told police that she was afraid for her life and had described allegations of stalking. Her relationship with Miller was also ending. She served him divorce papers only two days before she died.

The aftermath brought increased scrutiny to the couple’s relationship and to allegations that Mica had experienced controlling and abusive behavior.

Miller later faced federal charges relating to alleged cyberstalking and false statements to investigators. According to the indictment and reporting on the case, prosecutors allege that his conduct toward Mica included unwanted communications and other forms of harassment. He has pleaded not guilty.

The federal charges do not accuse Miller of killing Mica, and her death remains officially classified as a suicide. The documentary instead examines the broader circumstances surrounding her final years and why her family continues to seek clarity.

Understanding coercive control

A major theme of Death of the Pastor’s Wife is coercive control.

The term refers to a pattern of domestic abuse in which one person gradually restricts another person’s freedom, independence and sense of self through sustained psychological, emotional or financial manipulation.

The documentary uses Mica’s story to examine how this type of abuse can develop within an intimate relationship and how difficult it can be for someone experiencing it to break away.

That focus extends beyond Mica’s individual experience. In the aftermath of her death, her family has also pushed for legal reform and greater attention to coercive control.

The series therefore asks broader questions about how abuse can remain hidden, how people around a victim respond when concerns are raised, and what happens when someone struggling to leave a relationship seeks help.

How many episodes are there?

Death of the Pastor’s Wife consists of three episodes. Netflix describes the episodes as follows:

Episode 1, “A Note From Your Pastor”
Mica meets the charismatic John-Paul at age 13. Years later, their secret affair develops into a marriage, while the relationship behind closed doors becomes increasingly controlling.

Episode 2, “Helpmate”
As the marriage breaks down, the distinction between care and control becomes increasingly difficult to separate. Mica struggles with the decision to leave while also worrying about the church and the people connected to it.

Episode 3, “What Happened to Mica”
Mica’s life comes to a sudden end just as she appears to have hope for the future. The final episode turns to the questions left behind and her family’s continuing effort to find answers.

What kind of documentary is it?

Death of the Pastor’s Wife takes an intimate and investigative approach to a case that has generated intense public interest.

Rather than presenting Mica only through the circumstances of her death, the series reconstructs her life as a worship leader, daughter, sister, friend and wife.
