Victoria Coren Mitchell Left Stunned As Only Connect Contestants Solve Her ‘Least Favourite’ Question

Victoria Coren Mitchell was left genuinely baffled when Only Connect contestants managed to solve a question she had already dismissed as virtually impossible.

The BBC quiz show host has spent years watching teams tackle some of television’s most fiendish puzzles, but one sequence on Monday’s episode pushed even her patience to the limit.

Coren Mitchell had described the question as “ungettable” — and admitted she was convinced nobody would work out the answer.

A Bizarre Trail Of Clues

The teams were asked to identify the fourth item in a sequence.

The first two clues were mathematical equations which represented 20 acres and 43 acres. They were then shown a picture of a combine harvester.

For Coren Mitchell, the connection between the clues seemed almost impossibly obscure.

But Team The Jukeboxers somehow managed to crack it.

They correctly identified the missing fourth item as a key, referring to The Wurzels’ No 1 hit The Combine Harvester.

The song includes the lines: “I got 20 acres and you got 43 / Now I got a brand new combine harvester and I’ll give you the key.”

The unexpected correct answer appeared to leave Coren Mitchell almost speechless.

‘This Is My Least Favourite Question’

Looking visibly shocked by the solution, she admitted just how strongly she disliked the puzzle.

“This is my least favourite question in the whole series,” she told the contestants.

“I think it’s ungettable. I hate almost everything about it. I said nobody could get it.”

She then attempted to explain exactly why she found the sequence so frustrating.

“Here’s my problem. One… why would you look at that and it says square feet, why would you change it into acres?” she said.

“Two, in doing that, how would you know how many acres it was? Three, what’s that then got to do with this weird machinery?”

And even after identifying the combine harvester, Coren Mitchell still could not understand how contestants were expected to reach the final answer.

“Even if you somehow went, ‘Oh that’s a combine harvester from the song’, how would you know that it goes, ‘And I’ll give you the key’?” she continued.

“Tell me I’m not alone. It doesn’t make any sense, does it? It makes no sense.”

The Jukeboxers Crack The Impossible

Despite Coren Mitchell’s disbelief, The Jukeboxers had successfully followed the bizarre chain from the measurements to the machinery and then to the lyrics of The Wurzels’ famous song.

It was exactly the kind of obscure connection that has become synonymous with Only Connect, where seemingly unrelated clues can suddenly click into place.

For the host, however, this particular puzzle appeared to remain firmly on the wrong side of the line between clever and completely baffling.

And the fact that the contestants solved the very question she had confidently declared “ungettable” only made the moment even more memorable.
