Mariska Hargitay Tells Nicole Kidman to “Zip It” After Playful Emmys Interruption
Nicole Kidman was not about to let Mariska Hargitay steal one of her most recognizable movie moments — and the resulting exchange became one of the most talked-about moments of the 2026 Emmy Awards.
During her opening monologue at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday, Sept. 14, Hargitay, 62, turned her attention to Kidman’s famous AMC Theatres commercial, recreating the dramatic style of the actress’ viral 2021 advertisement.
But with Kidman, 59, sitting in the front row, the parody quickly became a playful back-and-forth between the two stars.
Hargitay Takes on Kidman’s Famous AMC Ad
Hargitay began the bit with an intentionally serious delivery, echoing the theatrical language from Kidman’s AMC campaign.
She spoke about the power of television and the experience of watching stories unfold on screen, adopting the same dramatic tone that made Kidman’s commercial so recognizable.
The reference was deliberate. Kidman’s 2021 AMC advertisement became a major pop-culture moment, spawning memes and parodies and turning its dramatic delivery into one of the most recognizable recent movie-theater commercials.
But Kidman was right there to defend her territory.
“No, Mariska, come on. That’s mine. That’s my bit. You can’t do that,” she called out from the audience.
Rather than backing down, Hargitay continued the joke.
When Kidman interrupted her again and insisted that another line belonged to her, the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star delivered the punchline:
“Zip it, movie lady, it’s TV’s time tonight!”
The audience responded with laughter as the two actresses continued the playful exchange.
A Musical Opening for Television’s Biggest Night
The Kidman moment was part of a larger opening number from Hargitay, who hosted the Emmys for the first time.
She kicked off the ceremony with a musical parody titled “I Love TV Screens,” a television-themed take on Joan Jett and the Blackhearts’ “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll.” The performance featured celebrity appearances including New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson and actress Jennifer Coolidge.
Hargitay also incorporated jokes about her nearly three-decade run on Law & Order: SVU and her long association with NBC.
Her hosting role carried additional significance: she became the first woman to host the Emmy Awards in 15 years, since Jane Lynch hosted the ceremony in 2011.
The Television Academy had announced Hargitay as host in July, highlighting her career as an Emmy-winning actor, director and producer as well as her connection to NBC during the network’s 100th anniversary year.
Kidman’s Front-Row Reaction Became Part of the Joke
Having Kidman seated in the front row made the AMC parody even more effective.
Instead of simply watching Hargitay imitate her, the Oscar-winning actress became an active participant in the joke, repeatedly interrupting the host and insisting that Hargitay was borrowing her material.
The exchange gave the opening monologue an improvised feel, even though the overall segment had been carefully structured.
Other coverage of the ceremony also singled out Kidman’s interruption as one of the more memorable moments of Hargitay’s opening.
Hargitay’s Emmys Debut Gets Mixed Reactions
Not every part of the opening received the same response.
Hargitay’s musical performance drew criticism from some viewers online, with social-media reactions describing the number as awkward or “cringe.” Entertainment coverage likewise noted that the opening song divided audiences, even as the Nicole Kidman exchange was widely viewed as a highlight.
Still, Hargitay’s appearance marked a notable moment for the longtime television star.
Beyond her SVU career, she arrived at the ceremony having recently won two Creative Arts Emmys for My Mom Jayne, her documentary about her mother, actress Jayne Mansfield.
And for one brief moment during her opening monologue, the distinction between Hollywood’s movie and television worlds disappeared — replaced by two famous actresses jokingly arguing over who had the right to deliver a very familiar line.
For Kidman, it was her iconic movie-theater moment.
For Hargitay, it was simply TV’s turn.
