Irena’s Vow Finds a New Audience on Netflix With Its Powerful WWII Story
Some war films arrive with enormous publicity and stay in the spotlight for years. Others quietly make their way into theaters, receive strong reviews, and then largely disappear from the conversation.
Irena’s Vow belongs to the second category. The 2023 historical drama, which received a limited theatrical release in 2024, is now available to stream on Netflix and has found a new audience on the platform.
At the center of the film is Sophie Nélisse, who plays Irena Gut, a young Polish woman whose decision to hide Jewish people from the Nazis puts her own life at extraordinary risk.
The role is a striking departure from the kind of character Nélisse played in Heated Rivalry, where she appeared as Rose Landry, Shane Hollander’s girlfriend who later becomes his friend. Here, the actor takes on a much more historically grounded role in a story built around survival, courage and moral choices during the Second World War.
A true story of extraordinary risk
Directed by Louise Archambault and written by Dan Gordon, Irena’s Vow is based on the true story of Irena Gut Opdyke. The film is also adapted from Gordon’s stage play of the same name.
The story begins in Poland after the Nazi invasion. Irena, a Polish Catholic nurse, is forced away from her previous life and eventually becomes a housekeeper for a German Army officer, played by Dougray Scott.
Her position gives her access to a place that, under ordinary circumstances, should have been controlled by the Nazis. Instead, Irena uses that position to help people who are in grave danger.
When she learns that the Jewish ghetto is going to be liquidated, she decides to shelter Jewish workers in the basement of the German commandant’s home. The decision turns an already dangerous situation into a constant struggle to keep herself and the people she is protecting alive.
The official synopsis describes Irena as 19 years old when she is promoted to housekeeper in the home of a respected Nazi officer. Over the following two years, she secretly protects twelve Jewish people while attempting to maintain the appearance of an ordinary household.
That setup gives the film its central tension. Irena is surrounded by the very people from whom she is trying to protect those hidden beneath the house.
The story also moves beyond the initial decision to hide them. Irena must navigate Nazi parties, a blackmail scheme and other threats while continuing to conceal the people living beneath the commandant’s home.
Sophie Nélisse leads the film
Nélisse carries the film as Irena Gut, with Dougray Scott and Andrzej Seweryn among the principal cast. Maciej Nawrocki, Eliza Rycembel, Nela Maciejewska and Aleksandar Milicevic are also part of the ensemble.
The performance was one of the elements highlighted by critics after the film’s release.
Christy Lemire of RogerEbert.com praised Nélisse’s presence in the role, writing that the story is so worthwhile that audiences cannot look away, while Nélisse’s performance makes them want to keep watching.
Codie Allen of Geek Vibes Nation similarly argued that the film rises above familiar genre conventions and becomes a story about the resilience of the human spirit.
The response has remained broadly positive. Rotten Tomatoes currently lists the film at 86% from 36 critics, with an 83% audience score from 50+ ratings.
Those figures can change as additional reviews and audience ratings are added, but they illustrate the generally favorable reception the film has received.
From stage play to the big screen
Irena’s Vow first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2023, before receiving further festival screenings and eventually reaching theaters.
In the United States, the film had a limited theatrical release on April 15, 2024. Fathom Events and Quiver Distribution were involved in its theatrical release.
Its theatrical run was relatively modest, which helps explain why the film may have escaped the attention of viewers who are interested in historical dramas but never encountered it in theaters.
The film runs for approximately two hours and one minute and is classified as a war drama, biography and historical film. It carries an R rating for strong violence and brief sexuality.
Why the Netflix release matters
The streaming release gives Irena’s Vow another opportunity to reach viewers who may have missed its theatrical run.
That is particularly relevant for a film built around a true story that is less widely known than many of the major Second World War dramas. Its central character is not a soldier or political leader. Instead, the story follows a young woman whose position inside a German officer’s household allows her to take an enormous personal risk on behalf of people facing persecution.
Netflix currently lists Irena’s Vow among its available titles in some territories, although availability varies by country.
The film’s renewed visibility on streaming also puts Nélisse’s performance in front of an audience that may know her from other projects but have not yet seen her in this role.
