Black Doves Season 2: First Look Reveals Bigger Stakes for Keira Knightley and Sarah Lancashire
The secrets are getting harder to hide in Black Doves.
Netflix has released a first look at the second season of its hit spy thriller, bringing Keira Knightley, Ben Whishaw and Sarah Lancashire back for another dangerous chapter. The new season arrives on Netflix on 5 November, with Helen Webb facing an even more complicated double life as her husband prepares to become Prime Minister.
The first season followed Helen, a spy living undercover as the wife of politician Wallace Webb. For 10 years, she had been passing her husband’s political secrets to the clandestine Black Doves organisation through her handler, Mrs Reed, played by Lancashire.
Her carefully constructed life began to collapse after her secret lover, Jason, was murdered. With Helen determined to discover who was responsible and why, Reed called on Helen’s old friend Sam Young, a former high-end assassin played by Whishaw, to protect her.
The investigation eventually exposed a much larger conspiracy, while Helen and Sam were forced to confront the consequences of their pasts.
Now, the danger has followed them into a new chapter.
Helen Webb is closer to the heart of power than ever
Season 2 finds Helen in an increasingly precarious position. She is still passing government secrets to the Black Doves, but Wallace is preparing to become Prime Minister, putting Helen closer to the centre of political power while making the consequences of her secret work potentially more serious.
At the same time, Reed becomes caught up in a ruthless attempt to undermine her position within the Black Doves. With her handler’s situation changing dramatically, Helen is forced to navigate the organisation without the security she once had.
Netflix describes Helen as walking a more dangerous line than ever as she tries to balance her marriage, her work and the people she wants to protect.
The trailer also hints that Helen’s cover may finally be in danger. At one point, her husband is warned: “I’m not sure that your wife is who you think she is.”
That suspicion could put everything Helen has built at risk.
Sam is pulled back into the criminal underworld
Sam is also in a very different place when the new season begins.
Once an elite hitman, he has fallen into a much quieter and more isolated existence, spending his time drinking in Soho bars and taking lower-level jobs. His situation is complicated by legal trouble and a mysterious arrangement with a man who helps him avoid prison.
Despite their separate struggles, Helen and Sam are drawn back together when Reed becomes caught in the new conspiracy surrounding the Black Doves.
Their search for answers takes them back to people from their past, including both old friends and enemies. The investigation also forces them to confront decisions and sacrifices they have previously tried to leave behind.
As their loyalties are tested and trust begins to break down, protecting the people they care about could come at an enormous personal cost.
A new agent joins the Black Doves
Season 2 expands the world of the organisation with several new characters.
Ambika Mod, best known for One Day, joins the cast as Laila, a Black Doves agent who is described as irreverent and chaotic. She becomes part of Helen’s mission as the situation surrounding the organisation grows increasingly dangerous.
Babou Ceesay (Alien: Earth) plays Mr. Conteh, a Black Doves executive whose motives appear questionable.
Sam Riley (Firebrand) joins as Patrick, an emissary from a mysterious organisation who offers Sam a possible way out of his increasingly difficult circumstances.
Neve Campbell (Scream, The Lincoln Lawyer) also joins the series as Cecile Mason, a US defense envoy. Sylvia Hoeks, Goran Kostic and Samuel Barnett are also among the newcomers, playing Katia Chernov, Alexi Chernov and Jerry respectively.
Familiar faces return
The second season brings back much of the central cast.
Knightley returns as Helen Webb, while Whishaw reprises his role as Sam Young and Lancashire returns as Mrs Reed.
Andrew Buchan is back as Wallace Webb, Helen’s politician husband, who is now preparing to become Prime Minister.
Also returning are Kathryn Hunter as Lenny Lines, Ella Lily Hyland as Williams, Gabrielle Creevy as Eleanor, Agnes O’Casey and Molly Chesworth.
The returning characters are particularly important as Helen and Sam’s latest investigation pulls them back into the same network of relationships, rivalries and unfinished business established in the first season.
What happened to Helen and Sam?
The first season ended with Helen and Sam surviving a violent confrontation at Christmas, but neither emerged from the events unscathed.
Helen returned to something resembling normal family life with Wallace, although his suspicions about her past remained.
Sam, meanwhile, was forced deeper into the criminal world after protecting Helen by killing London crime boss Alex Clark and her son, Trent. The decision also meant leaving Michael, the love of his life, behind.
Those events provide much of the emotional groundwork for the second season. The new story once again places the friendship between Helen and Sam at its centre, while surrounding them with political intrigue, criminal threats and the dangerous world of the Black Doves.
Netflix’s official synopsis promises the same combination of sharp humour and high-stakes action that defined the first season, with Helen and Sam’s latest mission eventually taking them to the very heart of the organisation.

Netflix has now released the official Season 2 trailer, offering the first extended look at Helen, Sam and the new threats awaiting them.
The trailer teases a story in which old alliances become increasingly difficult to trust, while Helen’s double life threatens to collide with Wallace’s political ambitions.
The second season will also bring back the series’ blend of espionage, action, dark humour and complicated personal relationships.

Black Doves Season 2 premieres on Netflix on 5 November 2026.
Until then, the six-episode first season remains available to stream on Netflix.
With Helen now operating closer than ever to the centre of government, Sam pulled back into the criminal world and Reed facing a threat from within the Black Doves, the second season has plenty of unfinished business to resolve.
