More than a decade after its release, Bridge of Spies remains a highly regarded Cold War thriller, bringing together Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Mark Rylance for a fact-based story of espionage, diplomacy and a high-stakes prisoner exchange.

The 2015 historical drama follows American lawyer James B. Donovan as he becomes unexpectedly involved in one of the most sensitive negotiations of the Cold War. It returns to Film4 tonight, Wednesday, September 30, at 6:15pm.

A lawyer caught in the middle of the Cold War

Hanks stars as Donovan, a lawyer who is asked to defend Rudolf Abel, a Soviet spy captured by the United States.

Although Abel is convicted, Donovan argues against the death penalty, believing that the Soviet agent could potentially become valuable in a future exchange. His decision later proves crucial when American pilot Francis Gary Powers is captured after his U-2 spy plane is shot down over Soviet territory.

Donovan is eventually drawn into negotiations to secure Powers’ release. His mission takes him to divided Berlin, where he attempts to arrange a prisoner exchange involving Abel, Powers and American economics student Frederic Pryor.

The title refers to Glienicke Bridge, the historic crossing between Potsdam and West Berlin where the exchange took place.

Directed by Spielberg and written by Matt Charman with Ethan Coen and Joel Coen, Bridge of Spies combines legal drama with Cold War espionage.
