Payback: The Edinburgh Crime Thriller Where One Woman’s Perfect Life Unravels

What happens when the man you thought you knew turns out to have been hiding a criminal empire behind your family’s comfortable life?

That is the question at the heart of Payback, the six-part Edinburgh crime thriller starring Morven Christie and Peter Mullan. The 2023 drama follows Lexie Noble, whose seemingly secure suburban life collapses after her husband Jared is attacked and the truth about his secret dealings begins to emerge.

Written by Debbie O’Malley and executive produced by Jed Mercurio, whose credits include Line of Duty, the series combines murder, money laundering and organised crime with a story about a woman forced to survive between a police investigation and the criminal operation her husband secretly served. ITV describes it as a character-led thriller in which Lexie becomes trapped between crime boss Cal Morris and the investigators determined to bring him down.

All six episodes are currently available on ITVX.

Lexie’s Ordinary Life Hides a Dangerous Secret

When the story begins, Lexie Noble appears to have a stable family life in the suburbs of Edinburgh.

Played by Morven Christie, she is a mother of two who has spent years at home caring for her six-year-old daughter. She is also preparing to return to work at the accountancy business she runs with Jared.

Everything changes when Jared is attacked in the street.

What initially appears to be a random act of violence soon reveals something far more complicated. Jared had secretly been laundering large sums of money for Cal Morris, a notorious crime lord played by Peter Mullan.

Lexie had no idea.

Her husband’s hidden business dealings have already attracted the attention of financial investigators DC Jibran Khan and DCI Adam Guthrie, played by Prasanna Puwanarajah and Derek Riddell respectively. Their investigation is focused on building a case against Cal, but Jared’s death suddenly places Lexie at the centre of it.

A Woman Caught Between Police and a Crime Boss

Payback review – every actor in this gangland drama oozes quality | Television & radio | The Guardian

With Jared gone, Lexie is left dealing with two very different forces.

The police want information that could help bring Cal Morris to justice. Cal, meanwhile, needs Lexie to help him recover what has gone missing from his criminal operation.

He forces her to cooperate.

That leaves Lexie in an increasingly dangerous position. She must work with a crime boss who cannot be trusted while also facing investigators who suspect she knows more than she is admitting.

ITV’s episode descriptions chart how quickly the situation escalates. Lexie is confronted by DCI Guthrie, turns her attention to finding Cal’s missing money, travels to Vilnius following a major revelation and eventually visits the Isle of Eris, where her world is shaken again.

The central tension comes from Lexie trying to protect herself and her family while navigating both sides of the investigation.

Morven Christie and Peter Mullan Lead a Strong Cast

Christie carries much of the drama as Lexie, whose ordinary life is gradually transformed by circumstances she never expected.

Peter Mullan, meanwhile, gives Cal Morris an intimidating presence. The Guardian highlighted the quality of the ensemble, particularly the contrast between Christie’s believable portrayal of an ordinary woman caught in an extraordinary situation and Mullan’s quietly threatening crime lord.

The supporting cast includes Steven Mackintosh, Julie Graham and Eileen Duffy, alongside Prasanna Puwanarajah and Derek Riddell.

The performances were one of the most consistent points of praise in contemporary reviews. The Guardian described the series as having a strong ensemble with no obvious weak link, while also noting Christie’s central performance and Mullan’s menace as particular strengths.

A Thriller Built Around Financial Crime

ITV SCREENGRAB

Unlike crime dramas driven primarily by detectives chasing a conventional killer, Payback centres on money laundering and organised crime.

The story revolves around a huge amount of missing money and the increasingly complicated attempts to trace it. Jared’s financial expertise made him useful to Cal, while his death leaves behind information that both the police and criminals desperately want.

The Guardian described the series as an Edinburgh-set financial crime thriller and noted its brisk pace.

That financial-crime angle also gives Lexie’s predicament an unusual dimension. She is not simply trying to uncover why her husband died. She is gradually forced to understand the criminal world he had concealed from her while trying to work out whom she can trust.

Six Episodes of Escalating Pressure

ITV SCREENGRAB

Each episode pushes Lexie further into the conflict.

The opening chapter plunges her family into danger after Jared’s attack. From there, she has little choice but to cooperate with Cal, while DCI Guthrie and DC Khan continue closing in on his operation.

By the fourth episode, Lexie is concentrating her efforts on finding Cal’s missing money. The fifth brings a revelation in Vilnius, and the final episode takes her to the Isle of Eris, where another discovery changes the stakes once again.

The result is a story that continually shifts the pressure around its central character.

What Critics Said About Payback

The Guardian gave the drama three out of five stars, praising its cast while acknowledging that some elements of the plotting were less convincing. The review nevertheless described it as a fast-moving crime drama with consistently strong performances.

Another Guardian piece called it a sharply observed Edinburgh-set thriller focused on financial crime, again highlighting Christie, Mullan and the wider ensemble.

The show’s appeal ultimately rests on that combination of pace, location and performances. Edinburgh provides the backdrop, but the real focus remains Lexie’s increasingly precarious position as the police investigation and Cal’s criminal operation begin to close in around her.

Where to Watch Payback

Payback originally aired on ITV in 2023 and was released as a complete series on ITVX. ITV’s current listing includes all six episodes, each running for around 57 minutes.

The series is a dark crime drama built around murder, money laundering and the search for justice, with Morven Christie at its centre and Peter Mullan as the crime boss whose operation turns Lexie’s life upside down.

For viewers looking for a compact British thriller with six episodes of shifting loyalties, financial crime and mounting pressure, Payback offers a tense story that wastes little time putting its central character in danger.
