‘Jeopardy!’ Fans Stunned as High-Scoring Showdown Ends in a Dramatic Final Wager
A commanding lead of more than $34,000 wasn’t enough to guarantee victory on Jeopardy! when one risky Final Jeopardy! wager changed everything. Frank Merchlewitz appeared to be in a strong position heading into the final round on Monday, October 19, but his decision to bet big opened the door for Anthony Cantor to snatch the championship.
Merchlewitz, from Robbinsdale, Minnesota, returned for his second game with $14,350 in previous winnings. He faced Cantor, a television and podcast producer from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and Aster Wise, a music teacher from Annandale, Virginia.

Frank Merchlewitz Builds a Strong Lead
Merchlewitz established himself as the player to beat early in the game. After successfully answering a Daily Double, he finished the first round with $9,600.
Cantor remained within reach with $6,000, while Wise ended the round in third place with $3,200.
The competition intensified during Double Jeopardy!, when both Merchlewitz and Cantor found Daily Doubles. Merchlewitz made an especially bold move on the final one, wagering his entire amount and strengthening his position at the top of the scoreboard.
By the end of the round, he had accumulated an impressive $34,400. Cantor was not far behind with $27,200, while Wise trailed with $6,000.
With such a substantial amount of money at stake, the final question was set to determine whether Merchlewitz could hold on to his lead or whether Cantor could pull off a comeback.
One Final Clue Changes Everything
The Final Jeopardy! category was “Movie Promotions,” with contestants asked to identify a company involved in an unusual promotional stunt in 2001.
The clue read: “In 2001, 20th Century Fox used a Coast Guard helicopter to ‘rescue’ a prop before a homecoming at this company’s Chicago HQ.”
Only one contestant came up with the correct response.
Wise guessed, “What is a car?” and wagered $5,000. Her incorrect answer left her with $1,000.
Cantor, however, correctly identified the answer as “What is Wilson?” He wagered $10,000, bringing his final total to $37,200.
The clue referred to the volleyball named Wilson featured in the 2000 film Cast Away.
Merchlewitz went in a different direction, writing, “What is McDonald’s?” His response was incorrect, and his $20,000 wager dropped his score to $14,399.
The result was a dramatic reversal: Cantor emerged as the new champion, despite entering Final Jeopardy! in second place.
Fans React to the Dramatic Finish
The game prompted enthusiastic reactions from viewers on Reddit, with many praising the exciting competition.
“That was such an insane session,” one fan wrote.
Another welcomed the high-scoring battle, commenting, “Now that’s the kind of game I’ve been wanting.”
“Frank was awesome!” a third viewer added.
One fan even predicted that both contestants could remain important names in the competition, writing, “Wow… I think we will see Frank back, and I think Anthony could be the first five-game winner this season.”
Cantor, whose production credits include the 2022 series Never Seen Again, the 2025 title The Hidden Holocaust Papers: Survival. Exile. Return., and the 2026 series Jack Carr Investigates: Carlos the Jackal, is now set to return for his second game on Tuesday.
For Merchlewitz, the episode ended with a costly wager. For Cantor, it marked the beginning of a championship run that fans will be watching closely.
