Beloved P.D. James Bestseller Becomes a Dark Austen Mystery Now Streaming on Channel 4
Fans who have made their way through the best-known period dramas may want to add one darker title to their watchlist.
Based on P.D. James’ bestselling 2011 novel, the three-part BBC adaptation Death Comes to Pemberley picks up the story of Jane Austen’s beloved characters six years after the events of Pride and Prejudice — but instead of focusing solely on romance, it introduces a murder mystery that throws the Darcy family into turmoil.
Originally broadcast by the BBC in 2013, the drama is now available to stream on Channel 4.
A Familiar World With a Much Darker Mystery
The story opens in June 1803, with Mr and Mrs Darcy preparing to host a grand ball at their estate, Pemberley Manor.
The evening takes an unexpected turn when Lydia Wickham arrives in a state of panic. She claims that her husband, George Wickham, has become involved in a confrontation with his travelling companion, Captain Denny — and that Denny has been killed.
From that moment, the familiar world of Austen’s characters takes a sharp turn into murder and suspicion.
What follows is a whodunit involving hidden secrets, complicated family connections and courtroom drama, while the investigation also threatens to put pressure on Darcy and Elizabeth’s marriage.
The result has often been compared with an Agatha Christie mystery transplanted into Jane Austen’s fictional world: the characters and setting remain recognisable, but the story takes them into considerably darker territory.
A Strong Cast Brings Austen’s Characters Back
The adaptation features Matthew Rhys as Fitzwilliam Darcy and Anna Maxwell Martin as Elizabeth Bennet.
Matthew Goode plays George Wickham, while Jenna Coleman takes on the role of Lydia Wickham.
The supporting cast includes Eleanor Tomlinson as Georgiana Darcy, James Norton as Henry Alveston and Penelope Keith as Lady Catherine de Bourgh.
There is also a connection to the much-loved 1995 television adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. Tom Ward, who plays Colonel Fitzwilliam in Death Comes to Pemberley, previously appeared in that production in a minor role.
Nearly 8 Million Watched the Original Broadcast
When the drama first aired over Christmas in 2013, almost 8 million viewers tuned in.
The response from critics was also positive, with the series described at the time as fitting perfectly into the festive television schedule.
Viewers have continued to praise the production since its original broadcast, particularly its treatment of Austen’s characters and source material.
One IMDb reviewer highlighted the care and respect given to the original story. Another acknowledged that Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle remained the definitive Darcy and Elizabeth for many viewers, but praised the supporting performances in this adaptation, particularly those playing Mr and Mrs Bennet, Lydia, Sir Selwyn Hardcastle, Georgiana Darcy and Alveston.
Another review offered perhaps the simplest verdict of all: “Jane Austen would approve.”
For viewers looking for something that combines the familiar characters of Pride and Prejudice with murder, courtroom tension and a more serious mystery, Death Comes to Pemberley offers a very different continuation of Austen’s world.
