A Couple of Lies: Netflix’s Twisted New Psychological Thriller Turns a House Swap Into a Nightmare
A dream holiday, a luxury home swap and two couples who barely know each other. It sounds like the perfect recipe for an escape, until secrets begin appearing in the places where neither couple expects to find them.
Netflix’s new four-part psychological thriller A Couple of Lies takes the familiar idea of swapping homes and turns it into something far more unsettling. When two couples exchange their properties between Stockholm and Sicily, what begins as a chance to escape everyday life gradually becomes a dangerous game of surveillance, manipulation and mistrust.
Based on Stefan Ahnhem’s novel of the same name, the Swedish series stars Frida Gustavsson, Fares Fares, Emma Appleton and Jakob Oftebro in the central roles. The series premieres globally on Netflix on Friday, October 30, 2026.

What is A Couple of Lies about?
At the heart of the story are Helene (Frida Gustavsson) and Carl (Fares Fares), a couple from Stockholm’s archipelago who are looking for some time away from their ordinary lives and a chance to reconnect.
They agree to exchange their stylish Swedish home for a sun-drenched villa in Sicily belonging to Scarlett (Emma Appleton) and Adam (Jakob Oftebro), a couple they have never met.
For both couples, the arrangement initially looks like an ideal escape. They can step into someone else’s home, experience a different lifestyle and enjoy a temporary break from their own problems.
But the holiday quickly takes an unsettling turn.
As the couples settle into their respective homes, strange details begin to emerge. Scarlett discovers a surveillance camera hidden in the kitchen of the riverside Stockholm property, raising an immediate and disturbing question: who is watching them, and why?
Meanwhile, Carl finds himself facing questions from the police in Italy after a violent crime takes place.
The more the couples discover, the harder it becomes to separate truth from deception. Secrets and hidden betrayals begin to surface, transforming what was supposed to be a picture-perfect home exchange into a psychological battle where nobody seems entirely trustworthy.
The premise gives the series two parallel settings to play with: the Stockholm archipelago and the Sicilian villa. Both initially represent escape and luxury, but each home gradually becomes a place where suspicion grows.
Netflix describes the series as a story in which the seemingly idyllic exchange turns toxic as the two couples go to extremes to protect themselves and their secrets.

What other psychological thrillers can I watch?
If the premise of A Couple of Lies appeals to you, there are other psychological thrillers worth turning to while waiting for the new series.
The Girl Before
The Girl Before follows Jane (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), who moves into an ultra-minimalist London home governed by a strict set of rules.
The property initially appears almost too perfect, but Jane soon becomes increasingly unsettled by the house and begins investigating what happened to the woman who lived there before her.
The deeper she digs into its history, the more disturbing the situation becomes. The series is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
White Lies
For another mystery built around secrets and a troubled past, White Lies follows journalist Edie (Natalie Dormer) as she investigates the murder of her estranged brother in a wealthy Cape Town suburb.
Her investigation exposes a darker side to his life, while Edie is forced to confront questions about her own innocence. The South African drama is available to watch on Channel 4.
With its combination of unfamiliar homes, hidden surveillance, fractured relationships and secrets that refuse to stay buried, A Couple of Lies puts a sinister spin on the idea of escaping into someone else’s life. The real question is whether the couples can uncover the truth before their temporary getaway becomes something far more dangerous.
