A Jean-Claude Van Damme action thriller from 2006 has made a surprise return to the spotlight after attracting 5 million views on Netflix in a single week.
The Hard Corps, which originally went straight to DVD in the US, ranked No. 3 on Netflix’s Global Top 10 films for the week of August 31 to September 6, 2026. The film stars Van Damme as Phillip Sauvage, an American soldier recovering from PTSD after serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. He is recruited to protect retired heavyweight boxing champion Wayne Barclay, played by Raz Adoti, after a dangerous rap mogul is released from prison.
Vivica A. Fox also stars as Tamara Barclay, Wayne’s sister and manager.
Nearly 20 years after its original release, the film’s renewed popularity has brought fresh attention to a title that received a relatively muted critical response when it first arrived.
What is The Hard Corps about?
The story begins with the release of notorious rap mogul Terrell Singletery, played by Viv Leacock, from prison.
His return creates serious concerns for Wayne Barclay and his family. Wayne, a former World Heavyweight champion who has gone on to become a successful businessman and community leader, is believed to be a target because of his connection to Singletery’s imprisonment.
Tamara, Wayne’s older sister and manager, responds by increasing his security.
A member of Wayne’s staff, Kendall Mullins, played by Peter James Bryant, has a connection to former Army soldier Clarence Bowden, portrayed by Julian D. Christopher. Bowden brings in Phillip Sauvage, a soldier he previously mentored.
Sauvage is recovering in a veterans hospital when he is recruited for the assignment. His military experience makes him a natural choice for a job that quickly turns into far more than routine bodyguard work.
The official Sony Pictures synopsis describes Sauvage as a former special forces soldier who assembles a team of fighters and former soldiers to protect Barclay and his family from Singletery.

Sauvage and the security team find themselves facing men working for Singletery, forcing them to rely on their military experience and combat skills.
