Jaws fans, we have a treat for you. Netflix has just released the trailer for Below, a new six-part series that promises “thrills galore” as an underwater creature terrorises locals in a small coastal town.
Few films in history have thoroughly thrilled audiences quite like Jaws. Steven Spielberg’s 1975 epic didn’t just terrify cinema audiences; it cemented the great white shark as one of Hollywood’s most unforgettable villains (and put more than a few people off swimming in the sea). Now, Netflix has unveiled the trailer for Below, a new six-part thriller from creator Jesse McKeown (The Umbrella Academy) that looks set to deliver all the same gripping suspense, tension and deep-sea dread as we wonder what might lurk beneath the surface. Check out the new trailer below (excuse the pun).
In Below, a small fishing community in Newfoundland becomes the target of a mysterious sea creature that terrorises its residents. Leading the charge against the monster are Josh Hartnett (Oppenheimer), Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) and Mackenzie Davis (Station Eleven), who fight to protect their community and their vanishing way of life.
What happens in Below?
Hartnett plays Calvin Penney, a big‑hearted yet stubborn fisherman who’s still haunted by his father’s mysterious death from decades ago. When an unidentified sea creature begins terrorising his hometown, Calvin must fight to hold his close-knit community together.
The synopsis reads: “Determined to keep his son, Wade (Charlie Heaton), and the rest of his family safe, he teams up with a visiting marine researcher (Mackenzie Davis) to confront the creature and reveal the island’s buried secrets before it’s too late. Blending local myth, thrilling suspense and heartfelt humour, this twisty six-part limited series dives into themes of family, community and change – both terrifying and inevitable.”

Who stars in Below?
Starring alongside Hartnett, Heaton and Davis are Willow Kean (The King Tide) as Ruth Penney and Ruby Stokes (Lockwood & Co) as Mary Penney. Meanwhile, Rohan Campbell (The Monkey) plays Jay Penney ,while Kaleb Horn (Revival) is Noah.
As for what we can expect? “Jesse’s bold, ambitious vision offers thrills galore, with the heart of a family drama,” promise Netflix Canada content directors Danielle Woodrow and Tara Woodbury. “We can’t wait to transport our members to coastal Newfoundland with this timely story about community, resilience and adaptability.”
Get ready to dive beneath the surface when Below lands on Netflix on 8 October.
