From a Longstanding Feud to a Musical Collaboration

Before joining forces on “Horses and Divorces,” Musgraves and Lambert had spent years on distant terms. Their strained relationship reportedly began when “Mama’s Broken Heart,” a song Musgraves co-wrote, went to Lambert without Musgraves knowing about it.

The situation contributed to tension between the two artists, who remained noticeably cool toward one another in the years that followed. Their eventual collaboration, however, offered a chance to revisit the past with humor rather than hostility.

How Kacey Musgraves and Miranda Lambert Made Peace

The idea for “Horses and Divorces” came to Musgraves after an unexpected moment of inspiration. In an interview with NPR, she recalled seeing Lambert on Instagram riding one of her horses and realizing that, despite their history, they shared two things in common.

“We’d lost touch for years and wouldn’t consider each other friends,” Musgraves told NPR.

She explained that seeing Lambert prompted her to imagine a song built around their shared experiences. As she put it, “Well, we ain’t friends, but I guess we have two things in common, horses and divorces, that’s for sure.”

That thought quickly developed into a creative idea. Musgraves began wondering whether the concept could become a humorous duet featuring Lambert herself, even suggesting that Lambert help write the song.

Rather than letting their past differences stand in the way, Musgraves decided to contact Lambert and see whether she would be interested. Lambert’s response was immediate and enthusiastic: “Hell yeah, I’m in, let’s do it.”

The resulting track became an opportunity for the two singers to turn an old disagreement into something they could enjoy together. Musgraves described the song as “a micro representation of what I wish that the world would do sometimes, just f**king sit down and poke fun at each other, have a beer and call it a day.”

Her description reflects the spirit behind the collaboration: sometimes, setting differences aside and finding humor in a shared history can be more productive than continuing a feud.

Miranda Lambert on Women Supporting Women in Country Music

Lambert also discussed the reconciliation and the broader importance of women supporting one another in the music industry during an interview with Rolling Stone.

She suggested that perspective often changes with age and experience, making it easier to move beyond old conflicts and recognize that there is room for multiple artists to succeed.

“I do think that comes with some time, and age, that you realize that more,” Lambert said. “The fire calms down just a little bit. You’re like, ‘OK, we all proved our point. They hear us all. There’s room for us.’”

Lambert also encouraged younger artists to adopt that outlook. Reflecting on her history with Musgraves, she acknowledged that neither singer was particularly concerned with the original source of their disagreement anymore.

“And so I want to encourage all the younger artists to be the same way because Kacey and I, whatever our beef was, neither one of us really cares or knows what it was about anymore,” she continued.

For Lambert, the experience also demonstrated how a difficult relationship can become a source of creative inspiration. She noted that their former conflict had given them material for a song she now loves.

“You know what I mean? But it’s also good to have a muse so we could use it and create this song that’s badass and I love it.”

A Surprise Performance That Brought Their Story Full Circle

Musgraves and Lambert’s surprise appearance together in Austin offered fans a chance to see their reconciliation play out in person. Their embrace and performance of “Horses and Divorces” provided a fitting continuation of the story behind the song, transforming years of tension into a shared musical moment.

What began with a disagreement over a song eventually led to a collaboration that both artists have embraced. Their reunion also underscored Lambert’s message that women in country music can make room for one another, move beyond old rivalries, and turn even an uncomfortable chapter into something worthwhile.
