Netflix’s 100%-Rated Sci-Fi Thriller Supacell Reaches Major Season 2 Filming Milestone

Netflix has officially confirmed that Supacell Season 2 has finished filming, marking a major step forward for the acclaimed British sci-fi thriller’s return.

The update comes two years after the first season concluded and gives fans their clearest indication yet that the series is moving toward its highly anticipated second chapter. Netflix confirmed the milestone in a statement, noting that Rapman’s BAFTA-winning series has now wrapped production on Season 2.

Supacell Season 2 Has Finished Filming

Netflix described Supacell as a series about five ordinary people who unexpectedly develop superpowers. The streamer confirmed that Season 2 has completed filming, although it has not yet revealed when the new episodes will premiere.

The production milestone arrives two years after the end of Season 1. While the wait has been lengthy, the conclusion of filming means the next stage of the series is now underway.

Created by Rapman, who also serves as showrunner, writer, and director, Supacell follows a group of seemingly ordinary people living in South London. Their lives are connected by a family history of sickle cell disease, which ultimately plays a role in their development of extraordinary abilities.

As the characters discover that they are not alone, they become targets of a dangerous organization determined to exploit their powers for its own purposes.

The Netflix Series Has a Perfect Critics’ Score

Supacell made a strong impression when its first season arrived on Netflix. The series currently holds a 100% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, earning a Certified Fresh designation based on 20 reviews.

ScreenRant’s review of Season 1 was similarly positive. Ben Gibbons awarded the series nine out of 10 stars, highlighting the performances and the way the writing steadily builds tension while keeping the story coherent and engaging.

The response from general viewers was more mixed. Supacell has a 69% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes, although its audience numbers were strong enough to convince Netflix that the series deserved another season.

Netflix announced the Season 2 renewal on August 13, less than two months after all of Season 1 was released on June 27.

Rapman’s Series Has Already Earned Major Recognition

Rapman’s work on Supacell has also received recognition from the BAFTAs. Season 1 earned a nomination for Best Drama Series, while Isabella Odoffin won the BAFTA for Best Scripted Casting.

The series features an ensemble cast led by Tosin Cole as Michael Lasaki-Brown. Nadina Mills plays Sabrina Clarke, Eric Kofi-Abrefa portrays Andre Simpson, Calvin Demba plays Rodney Cullen, and Josh Tedeku appears as Tazer.

The cast also includes Adelayo Adedayo as Dionne Ofori, Eddie Marsan as Ray, Giacomo Mancini as Spud, Michael Salami as Gabriel, and Rayxia Ojo as Sharleen Clarke.

Supacell Stands Among Netflix’s Notable Sci-Fi Thrillers

Netflix has built a strong lineup of science-fiction thrillers over the years, including Dark, 3 Body Problem, Altered Carbon, The Eternaut, Sense8, and Alice in Borderland.

Dark remains particularly well regarded within the genre, with a 95% critics’ score and a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile, 3 Body Problem and The Eternaut are both set to continue with additional seasons.

Supacell has also established itself as one of the notable superhero series outside the Marvel and DC universes after only one season. Its fellow genre standouts include The Boys, Invincible, The Umbrella Academy, Misfits, The Tick, and Heroes.

The completion of Season 2’s filming gives Supacell an opportunity to build on the reputation established by its debut. Netflix has yet to announce an official release date, but with production now finished, a 2027 premiere appears likely.
