One Day, I Shall Be either a Governess and a Spinster, or a Wife and a Mother… Netflix’s Lavish New Period Romance Is Already Drawing Comparisons To Colin Firth’s Legendary Mr Darcy — And The First Trailer Offers A Fresh Take On One Of Literature’s Most Beloved Love Stories

Netflix Unveils $60 Million Pride And Prejudice Adaptation As Jack Lowden Steps Into Colin Firth’s Iconic Mr Darcy Role

Netflix has finally lifted the curtain on its lavish new adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, giving fans their first glimpse of Jack Lowden as Mr Darcy and Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet. With a reported $60 million budget and a December release date, the streaming giant is taking on one of literature’s most beloved love stories — more than 30 years after Colin Firth’s legendary portrayal helped define the role for a generation.

The first-look trailer offers an early taste of the familiar romance, family tensions and social expectations that have kept Jane Austen’s classic alive for more than two centuries. But this time, the story arrives with a fresh creative team and a new generation of stars.

Emma Corrin Opens The Trailer With A Blunt Reflection On Marriage

The preview begins at Longbourn, where Elizabeth, played by Corrin, joins her sister Jane, portrayed by Freya Mavor, on the roof.

Elizabeth delivers a line that immediately sets the tone for the series: “One day, Jane, I shall be either a governess and a spinster, or a wife and a mother.. And then, finally, we may talk about something else.”

Jane’s brief response — “Such as what?” — leaves Elizabeth’s frustration hanging in the air, hinting at the pressures facing women whose futures are shaped by marriage, family and social standing.

Olivia Colman also makes an appearance as Mrs Bennet, delivering one of Austen’s most recognisable lines: “It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.”

It is a fitting introduction to a story in which romance is never entirely separate from money, reputation and the expectations of society.

Jack Lowden Takes On A Role Immortalised By Colin Firth

Lowden now steps into the role of Mr Darcy, one of the most enduring romantic leads in English literature. Corrin, best known for The Crown, takes on Elizabeth Bennet, the sharp-witted heroine whose initial clash with Darcy becomes the heart of the story.

The casting inevitably invites comparisons with the celebrated 1995 BBC adaptation, in which Colin Firth played Darcy opposite Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth. That six-episode series remains one of the best-known screen versions of the novel, which has been adapted for film and television around 15 times.

More than three decades later, Netflix is betting that Austen’s characters still have plenty to say to modern audiences.

The new adaptation is written by Dolly Alderton, whose bestselling memoir Everything I Know About Love was also adapted into a BBC series. Her involvement brings a fresh perspective to a story built around love, misunderstandings and the difficult choices that shape a person’s future.

Dolly Alderton Explains Why Austen’s Story Still Hits Home

For Alderton, the novel’s lasting appeal lies in its emotional honesty rather than its period setting.

“Pride and Prejudice is such a timeless story because of the emotions in the book; they are as pertinent now as they were in 1812,” she said.

She pointed to the fear of being left behind, embarrassment over family, concerns about the world children will inherit and the humiliation of judging someone incorrectly — or discovering that someone has judged you unfairly.

“We go to that book to see our hearts reflected in it,” Alderton explained.

She also revealed why Elizabeth’s opening speech was chosen for the trailer. The line, she said, speaks to women searching for love while resenting how much time the pursuit can consume.

Alderton added that it captures Elizabeth as a character who is still figuring things out as she goes along, rather than someone who already has all the answers.

That tension between what society expects and what Elizabeth actually wants remains central to the story — and gives this new version its clearest emotional starting point.

What Happens In Netflix’s New Pride And Prejudice?

According to Netflix’s official synopsis, the story follows the five Bennet sisters as they navigate love, family pressures and society’s expectations while trying to secure their futures.

Jane falls for the charming Mr Bingley, while Elizabeth clashes with his proud friend, Mr Darcy. As unexpected encounters and family scandals complicate their lives, Elizabeth is forced to reconsider her assumptions about Darcy and confront the true nature of love.

The premise remains faithful to Austen’s classic, but the new cast and Alderton’s adaptation will offer audiences another interpretation of the relationships and social pressures at its centre.
