Robert De Niro’s latest Netflix thriller has arrived with an impressive cast and a dark serial-killer mystery, but critics have been far less enthusiastic about the finished film. The Whisper Man, which premiered on Netflix on August 28, 2026, currently holds a 41% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes from 29 reviews, placing it in the site’s “rotten” category.
The film reunites De Niro with Netflix following the success of Zero Day, the political limited series that earned a much stronger critical response and became a notable hit for the streamer. The Whisper Man, however, has so far struggled to generate the same level of praise.
A Serial-Killer Mystery Based on Alex North’s Bestseller
Directed by James Ashcroft, The Whisper Man adapts Alex North’s 2019 New York Times bestselling novel of the same name. The screenplay was written by Ben Jacoby and Chase Palmer.
At the center of the story is Tom Kennedy, a widowed crime writer whose life is shattered when his 8-year-old son, Jake, is abducted. Desperate to find his child, Tom seeks help from his estranged father, retired police detective Pete Willis.
The investigation soon takes an unsettling turn. The disappearance appears connected to one of Pete’s most disturbing cases from decades earlier, involving a convicted serial killer known as The Whisper Man.
That connection brings the father and son back into a case that Pete had once put behind him, while forcing them to confront the legacy of the killer at its center.
Adam Scott, known for Severance, plays Tom Kennedy, while De Niro portrays Detective Inspector Pete Willis. Michelle Monaghan appears as Detective Amanda Beck, with Michael Keaton playing Frank Carter.
The supporting cast includes Hamish Linklater as Norman Collins, Owen Teague as Francis Carter Jr., Acston Luca Porto as Jake Kennedy, Will Brill as Sgt. John Dyson, Exavier Montanez as Neil Spencer, and Robert Clohessy as Víctor Tyler. Netflix and Rotten Tomatoes also list John Carroll Lynch among the cast.
Critics Find the Thriller Too Familiar
The film’s cast may be packed with recognizable names, but that star power has not translated into strong reviews.
With 29 critics’ reviews currently counted, The Whisper Man sits at 41% on Rotten Tomatoes. The response has focused heavily on the film’s execution, with several reviewers arguing that its familiar serial-killer formula prevents the performances and premise from having the impact they could have had.
Movies Thru the Spectrum critic Al Alexander offered one of the most severe assessments, describing the film as “a colossal mess” and “a tremendous waste of talent.”
The Guardian’s Benjamin Lee was also unconvinced. His criticism centered on the film’s trajectory: the story appears to be building toward something increasingly unusual and unpredictable, but ultimately does not deliver a conclusion he found equally satisfying.
The Times critic Kevin Maher took issue with the thriller’s reliance on established genre conventions. He drew comparisons to films including The Silence of the Lambs, Zodiac, and The Bone Collector, while also finding De Niro’s performance notably restrained.
That criticism reflects a broader concern among reviewers: The Whisper Man has the ingredients of a gripping crime thriller, but some critics feel it does not do enough to distinguish itself from earlier entries in the genre.
Viewers Have Been More Divided
The critical response tells only part of the story.
At the time of writing, Rotten Tomatoes had not yet listed an audience score for the film.
Early viewer reactions have nevertheless been more varied than the critics’ score might suggest. Some viewers have responded positively to the film’s dark atmosphere, cast, and fast-moving story.
One five-star review described The Whisper Man as a “Gripping dark thriller with a [stellar] cast.”
Another viewer praised the movie for maintaining its pace and continuing to move the story forward. That review suggested that audiences willing to approach the film with an open mind could have “a great time,” while also pointing to its twists and turns as part of the appeal.
That divide is already becoming one of the more notable aspects of the film’s release. Critics have largely questioned its originality and execution, while some early viewers appear more willing to embrace its familiar thriller elements.
A Familiar Formula With a Strong Cast
There is plenty of recognizable talent behind The Whisper Man. De Niro, Scott, Keaton, and Monaghan give the film an ensemble capable of carrying a high-profile crime thriller, while Ashcroft adapts a bestselling story built around child abduction, an old serial-killer case, and a complicated father-son relationship.
The film also reunites De Niro with Netflix after Zero Day, raising expectations for another successful collaboration. Instead, The Whisper Man has opened with a critical reception that is considerably more divided.
Whether the audience ultimately responds more favorably remains to be seen. For now, the film occupies an unusual middle ground: a Netflix thriller with considerable star power, a bestselling source novel, and a premise built around a notorious serial killer, yet one that has struggled to win over critics.
