Robert De Niro’s 114-Minute Crime Thriller Becomes One of Netflix’s Biggest Streaming Hits
Robert De Niro’s latest crime thriller has wasted little time finding a huge audience on Netflix. The Whisper Man, the 114-minute adaptation of Alex North’s novel, has quickly climbed to the top of the streamer’s movie charts and emerged as one of the platform’s biggest recent releases.
The film arrived on Netflix on August 28, 2026, and its performance has been particularly strong internationally. According to FlixPatrol data, The Whisper Man reached No. 1 in 69 countries by August 31. It also reached the top spot on Netflix’s U.S. movie chart shortly after its debut.
That momentum comes despite the film initially finishing second in Netflix’s weekly U.S. movie rankings for August 24-30. The title was beaten by Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look during that reporting period, while Facing El Chapo, The Secret Woman, and The Angry Birds Movie 2 also ranked among the week’s most-watched movies.
By the following days, however, The Whisper Man had moved to No. 1 in the United States and continued to dominate Netflix’s daily rankings.
What Is The Whisper Man About?
At the center of The Whisper Man is a disturbing case involving a serial killer whose crimes appeared to have ended years earlier.
Robert De Niro plays Peter Willis, a retired police detective who previously captured the killer known as the Whisper Man. For Peter, the case should have been finished. But when a new series of kidnappings begins, the past suddenly becomes impossible to ignore.
The story follows Tom Kennedy, played by Adam Scott, a widowed crime writer who has recently moved to a new town with his young son, Jake. Their attempt at a fresh start takes a horrifying turn when Jake is abducted.
With his son missing, Tom turns to the person he has spent years separated from: his estranged father, Peter.
The two begin investigating the disappearance together. Their search soon raises an unsettling possibility. The serial killer Peter believed he had captured may somehow be connected to the new crimes, forcing the retired detective to confront the Whisper Man once again.
Netflix’s official synopsis similarly describes the film as the story of a widowed father who seeks help from his estranged retired-detective father after his young son disappears, only to uncover a connection to the serial killer case from decades earlier.
A Cast Led by Robert De Niro and Adam Scott
Alongside De Niro and Scott, the film features Michelle Monaghan, Michael Keaton, Hamish Linklater, Owen Teague, and other members of the ensemble.
Netflix’s cast listing also includes Acston Luca Porto, Will Brill, John Carroll Lynch, and others.
The pairing of De Niro and Scott gives the film a family drama beneath its serial-killer mystery. Tom is desperate to recover his son, while Peter is forced back toward a case that has remained part of his past. Their investigation therefore operates on two levels, following the search for Jake while bringing the estranged father and son back together.
The movie also reunites De Niro with Michael Keaton, who appears in the film after the two previously worked together in Jackie Brown. Adam Scott has spoken about how significant it was to watch the two veteran actors share scenes again.
Based on Alex North’s Bestselling Novel
The Whisper Man is adapted from Alex North’s novel of the same name, which was originally published in 2020 and became a New York Times bestseller.
The film was directed by James Ashcroft, whose previous work includes The Rule of Jenny Pen. The screenplay was written by Ben Jacoby and Chase Palmer.
The adaptation keeps the central mystery from North’s book: a father searching for his abducted child becomes entangled in an older serial-killer investigation connected to his own family.
The 114-minute runtime gives the story room to combine the kidnapping mystery with the complicated relationship between Tom and Peter.
The Whisper Man Had a Strong Opening Week
The film’s streaming numbers help explain why Netflix has quickly turned attention toward the thriller.
During its opening week, The Whisper Man recorded 23.2 million views and accumulated 44.1 million hours watched, according to FlixPatrol’s record of Netflix’s weekly viewing data for August 24-30.
Those numbers put it among the major streaming successes of the week, even though Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look finished ahead of it in Netflix’s official U.S. weekly movie ranking.
The thriller’s momentum continued after that initial reporting period. FlixPatrol’s U.S. daily chart had The Whisper Man at No. 1 on August 29 and again on August 31, before listing it at the top of the U.S. Netflix movie chart on September 2.
Internationally, the film’s reach was even broader. By August 31, it had reached No. 1 in 69 countries, according to FlixPatrol-based reporting.
Netflix’s Next Major Thriller Is Unabomber
Netflix already has another crime thriller waiting in the wings. Unabomber is scheduled to arrive on September 25 and stars Jacob Tremblay, Russell Crowe, and Shailene Woodley in a film centered on Ted Kaczynski.
For now, though, The Whisper Man remains one of Netflix’s biggest movie draws. Its combination of Robert De Niro, Adam Scott, a missing-child mystery, and a decades-old serial-killer case has translated into strong global viewing numbers just days after release.
The Whisper Man is currently available to stream on Netflix.
