The Game Season 2: Robson Green and Jason Watkins Return for a Darker Battle of Wits
The game is far from over. After leaving viewers with a brutal cliffhanger, Channel 5’s psychological thriller The Game returned for a second series with Jason Watkins and Robson Green back at the centre of its unsettling cat-and-mouse story.
The four-part thriller originally premiered in May 2025 and quickly established itself as one of Channel 5’s strongest-performing dramas of the year. At its heart is former detective Huw Miller, played by Watkins, whose retirement has done little to free him from the one case that has haunted him for years.
That case leads directly back to Patrick Harbottle, the seemingly charming neighbour played by Green, who Huw eventually discovers is the serial killer known as the Ripton Stalker.
The first series ended with Huw badly wounded after Patrick stabbed him. Patrick was arrested, but the confrontation clearly did not mark the end of their psychological battle.
Season two picks up a year later, with Huw attempting to rebuild his life while Patrick remains behind bars. Yet even from prison, Patrick has found ways to reach into Huw’s world.
The second series premiered on Channel 5 on September 1, 2026, with the four-part story concluding on September 9.
Huw thought he had escaped Patrick
The first series left Huw fighting for his life in Alice’s arms after Patrick’s attack.
As Patrick was led away in handcuffs, Huw told his wife, “So sorry it took me so long. But I got there in the end.”
For a man who had spent years being consumed by the Ripton Stalker case, it appeared that Huw had finally solved the mystery that had followed him into retirement.
Season two quickly challenges that sense of closure.
A year after the stabbing, Huw is no longer a detective. He has moved with his wife Alice to an isolated home by the sea, hoping that distance from his old life will allow them both to recover and start again.
But the apparent peace does not last.
With Patrick imprisoned, Huw initially believes that the threat has finally been contained. The series, however, makes it clear that physical confinement is not enough to break Patrick’s influence.
Letters from Patrick begin to disrupt the family’s fragile sense of security, drawing Huw back toward the man and the case he has tried so hard to leave behind.
The result is another psychological battle between two men who know each other extremely well, with Huw once again forced to decide how far he is willing to go to uncover the truth.
Robson Green promises Patrick is back with a vengeance
Robson Green previously described his return to The Game as an exciting challenge.
Patrick may have ended the first series behind bars, but that does not mean his role in Huw’s life is finished. Green teased a character who continues to manipulate events and pull the strings despite being imprisoned.
“Just when you thought it was over, Patrick is back pulling strings with a vengeance,” Green said, promising audiences another gripping ride.
Jason Watkins also suggested that Huw’s ordeal is far from over.
“Huw has been through the mill and there’s no let-up this series,” he said, adding that he was excited to see what lay ahead for the character.
That dynamic remains central to the second series. Huw wants to put his past behind him, while Patrick continues to find ways to draw him back into the game.
The real-life serial killer who inspired Patrick
Green previously revealed that preparing to play Patrick involved looking closely at the behaviour of real-life criminals.
The actor said he was fascinated by true crime, particularly the methods criminals use and the destructive effect their behaviour can have on other people.
One particular figure became his main reference point: American serial killer Joseph James DeAngelo, known as the Original Night Stalker.
Green explained that DeAngelo would enter people’s homes and deliberately manipulate his victims psychologically. Among the behaviour that interested Green was the way DeAngelo could leave a door open or move an ornament from one house into another before returning weeks later.
For Green, the disturbing element was the apparent satisfaction DeAngelo gained from playing psychological games with his victims before ultimately killing them.
That approach helped inform Green’s portrayal of Patrick, whose threat has always extended beyond the physical danger he presents.

Jason Watkins returns as Huw Miller, while Robson Green reprises his role as Patrick Harbottle.
Watkins is known for Coma and W1A, while Green has starred in Grantchester and Strike Back.
They are joined by several returning cast members, including Sunetra Sarker as Alice, Indy Lewis as Margot Miller and Amber James as DS Jenny Atkins.
The second series also expands the cast with several new additions.
Sonny Ashbourne Serkis, known for Masters of the Air and The Witcher, joins alongside Tanya Franks, who has appeared in Broadchurch and Pulling.
The new cast also includes Dominic Rowan, known for The Crown and Catastrophe; Amanda Bright, whose credits include Buccaneers and Breeders; Richard Pepple from The Hack and The Rig; Carl Rice of Brassic and Deep Water; and Connor Calland, who has appeared in Adolescence and Stay Close.
The expanded ensemble gives the second series a wider story around Huw and Patrick, while the central conflict between the former detective and the imprisoned killer remains the driving force.
What happens in Season 2?
The second series begins with Huw trying to settle into a quieter existence with Alice after everything he endured.
Their isolated coastal home should offer the distance he needs. Instead, the arrival of communications from Patrick starts to undermine that new life.
At the same time, Huw’s daughter Margot is preparing to move in with her boyfriend Sam, adding another layer to the family story as Huw becomes increasingly drawn back toward the investigation.
As the episodes progress, the mystery surrounding another case begins to pull Huw deeper into the world he had hoped to escape.
By the third episode, Huw has uncovered evidence suggesting that Jonathan may never have been murdered and that Patrick could have fabricated his confession in response to police questioning. Huw keeps what he has discovered to himself, while Jenny becomes suspicious of his motives.
The fourth and final episode pushes the conflict to its conclusion, with Patrick escaping during a tense journey across the moors. Huw lies to Jenny about what has happened and tracks Patrick to an abandoned farmhouse, where another devastating revelation awaits.
The story ultimately brings Huw and Patrick back into direct conflict, with Patrick delivering what is described as a final, cruel masterstroke.
Where was The Game filmed?
Although The Game is set in the UK, the second series was filmed in Spain.
Robson Green revealed that he spent almost eight weeks there while filming, staying in an apartment overlooking a beach. He joked that the idyllic surroundings felt almost too peaceful for a series in which something terrible always seemed to be around the corner.
Some of the most important Huw and Patrick scenes were filmed at a university in San Sebastian. The production team transformed part of the largely deserted site into the prison used in the story.
The city’s distinctive narrow, cobbled streets also feature in the production, giving the thriller a striking European backdrop despite its British setting.

Channel 5 released a first look ahead of the second series, teasing the return of Huw and Patrick and the renewed psychological battle between them.
The promotional material makes one thing clear: Patrick’s imprisonment has not ended the game, and Huw is once again being drawn into a confrontation he thought was behind him.
The second series premiered on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at 9pm on Channel 5, with its four-episode run concluding on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
With Jason Watkins and Robson Green back in their respective roles, the second season takes the story beyond Huw’s original pursuit of the Ripton Stalker and into an even more personal battle. Patrick may be behind bars, but as the new series demonstrates, that has never been enough to stop him playing the game.
