The Magic Is Still There… Netflix Has Finally Revealed Its First Extended Look At A Highly Anticipated College Comedy Sequel — And The Familiar Faces Returning Alongside A Brand-New Generation Are Giving Longtime Fans A Serious Nostalgia Rush

Netflix has given fans their first extended look at its highly anticipated sequel to “A Different World,” and the new trailer makes it clear that Hillman College still has plenty of heart, humor and history.

The 10-episode comedy premieres Sept. 24 and centers on Deborah Wayne, played by Maleah Joi Moon, as she starts her freshman year at the fictional HBCU where her parents, Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, built their own college memories.

But Deborah isn’t simply stepping into her parents’ story. The sequel introduces a new generation of Hillman students as several familiar faces from the original series return to guide the next chapter.

The two-minute trailer revisits many of the elements that made the original sitcom memorable, from late-night dorm-room conversations and new romances to classroom mishaps, family pressure and the friendships that shape college life.

For Deborah, carrying the Wayne name comes with its own expectations. Her parents have been encouraging her to attend Hillman for years, but she wants to make her own mark. “My parents have been pushing Hillman since before they knew my name,” she says in the trailer. “I want to prove to them I can crush it.”

A new generation takes over Hillman College

The original “A Different World” followed Whitley, Dwayne and their classmates as they navigated the ups and downs of college. The sequel shifts that focus to Deborah and her peers.

Her classmates include Rashida Duvall, played by Alijah Kai; Shaquille Johnson, portrayed by Cornell Young IV; psychology major Amir Rodale, played by Jordan Aaron Hall; Hazel Henry, portrayed by Kennedi Reece; and Kojo Achebe, a Ghanaian and Nigerian fashion entrepreneur played by Chibuikem Uche.

The trailer sets up several personal and academic conflicts for the new students. Deborah has an existing, complicated relationship with Shaquille, while also dealing with the pressures of school, friendships and the expectations attached to being a Hillman legacy.

Showrunner Felicia Pride said Deborah was deliberately written as an imperfect young woman who is still figuring herself out.

“It was important to craft a character who’s trying to figure it out, who’s a little messy, who’s a little all over the place because this is a character that a lot of young people can relate to,” she explained in a press release. “She’s going to find her way, and even in Season 1, we start to see that.”

Familiar faces return to Hillman

Nostalgia remains a major part of the sequel, with several original cast members returning to their iconic roles.

Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison are back as Whitley and Dwayne, while Darryl M. Bell reprises his role as Ron Johnson. Cree Summer returns as Freddie Brooks, and Charnele Brown and Jada Pinkett Smith are also returning to the series.

Debbie Allen, whose influence on the original show went well beyond her guest appearances, is also returning. She serves as an executive producer and directs the premiere episode. In the new series, Allen appears as Deborah’s academic adviser, Dr. Langhorne.

For Allen, the show’s portrayal of college life remains meaningful for a new generation.

“It’s really great for young people to see themselves on a college campus thriving, making friends, falling in and out of love, and having a life,” she said in the press release.

The 76-year-old also explained why bringing back members of the original cast was important to the sequel. “It’s not just nostalgia. It’s like, ‘Where are they now?’”

The trailer also teases guest appearances from artists including Summer Walker and Method Man.

Brandy reimagines the “A Different World” theme

Music is also getting a new chapter. As REVOLT previously reported, Brandy recorded a reimagined version of the iconic “A Different World” theme song for the Netflix sequel.

The opportunity carries personal significance for the singer, who has credited the original series with inspiring her own ambitions.

“Singing this iconic theme song for ‘A Different World’ means everything to me,” Brandy told Netflix’s Tudum. “It was one of those shows that I had to watch every time it came on. I remember the song and how it made me feel.”

She also reflected on the influence the series had on her as a child.

“’A Different World’ inspired me as a kid. It made me feel like I could go out into the world and become my own person. With hard work and dedication, I could make my dreams come true.”
