Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers and G.K. Chesterton are stepping out of the pages of their own mysteries and into a very different role: amateur detectives investigating real murders.
That is the premise behind The Detection Club, the BBC’s new 10-part mystery drama, which is inspired by the golden age of detective fiction and brings three of Britain’s most celebrated crime writers together in 1930s London.

Three legendary writers, one very unusual mystery club
Created for television by Kit Lambert and based on an original idea by acclaimed author Simon Brett, The Detection Club imagines what might happen if some of the writers responsible for Britain’s most famous fictional detectives were given the opportunity to investigate crimes themselves.
The story centres on Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers and G.K. Chesterton, who come together as part of a mysterious society in 1930s London.
Their meetings take place at a secret London location, where the celebrated writers gather to develop their craft. Their world is one of literary glamour and changing society, but the atmosphere soon takes a darker turn when an unexpected invitation draws them into their first real murder investigation.
From there, the trio begin working together to unravel a series of mysteries, putting the instincts and deductive skills that made their fictional detectives famous to a very different test.
The premise gives the drama a distinctive twist. Rather than watching Christie, Sayers and Chesterton simply inspire fictional sleuths, viewers will see the writers themselves attempting to solve crimes.
The series is produced by BBC Studios Drama Productions and filming is taking place across the West Midlands.
A young detective is not convinced by their methods
The writers’ investigations also bring them into contact with D.I. Greenway, a young police detective who is still trying to establish himself.
Viraj Juneja plays Greenway, whose determination to prove his abilities puts him in an awkward position. The writers have extraordinary instincts when it comes to solving mysteries, but their conclusions and methods do not always make the detective’s job easier.
That tension should provide another layer to the series as the amateur investigators and the professional policeman find themselves working around one another while pursuing the same cases.
The cast bringing the literary legends to life
The three central writers are played by Miles Jupp, Bryony Hannah and Cara Theobold.
Jupp takes on the role of G.K. Chesterton, while Hannah plays Agatha Christie and Theobold portrays Dorothy L. Sayers. Viraj Juneja joins them as D.I. Greenway.
The casting brings together performers with familiar television credits. Hannah is known for Call the Midwife and Rivals, while Theobold has appeared in Downton Abbey and The Syndicate. Jupp’s credits include Belgravia: The Next Chapter and Napoleon. Juneja has appeared in Little English and Get Duked!.
The actors have also spoken about the challenge of portraying such well-known literary figures.
For Hannah, the role offers an opportunity to explore the woman behind Christie’s extraordinary reputation. Theobold has described Sayers as sharp, funny and uncompromising, while Jupp has highlighted Chesterton’s intellect, storytelling ability and eccentricity.
Inspired by a real literary society
The drama takes its name from a real organisation. The Detection Club was formed in 1930 by British mystery writers and continues to exist today. G.K. Chesterton was its first president, while Dorothy L. Sayers and Agatha Christie later served as presidents.
The television series takes that real literary connection and turns it into a fictional murder mystery. Its version of the club becomes a setting where three major crime writers can develop their ideas before finding themselves confronted with crimes that are no longer confined to the page.
That combination of historical literary figures, fictionalised investigations and classic detective storytelling is central to the show’s appeal.
When will The Detection Club be released?

The 10-part series has now begun production, with BBC Studios handling global sales and further casting and transmission details still to be announced.
