Netflix releases The Gentlemen season 2 trailer as Downton Abbey and Love Island stars join
Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for season two of The Gentlemen, revealing what viewers can expect when the hit crime comedy returns next month. The new series will pick up one year after the events of the first season, with Eddie Horniman and Susie Glass facing fresh complications as they continue expanding their criminal empire.
Created by Guy Ritchie for Netflix, The Gentlemen is a spin-off of his 2019 film of the same name. The series stars Theo James as Eddie, a former army captain who unexpectedly inherits his father’s country estate and discovers that the property is at the centre of a huge cannabis operation.
Ray Winstone and Kaya Scodelario are also among the show’s leading cast members, with Scodelario returning as Susie. The latest trailer hints that their increasingly ambitious criminal enterprise will bring even bigger risks and more unpredictable twists.
Hugh Bonneville and Maya Jama join the cast
Several recognisable names are joining the cast for the new season.
Hugh Bonneville, best known for playing Robert Crawley in Downton Abbey, appears in the trailer. In one scene, his character is asked to “decriminalise marijuana”.
Love Island host Maya Jama will also make her acting debut in the series. Other new cast members include Benjamin Clementine, Benedetta Porcaroli, Michele Morrone, Sergio Castellitto, Amra Mallassi, Tyler Conti and Chris Eubank Jr.
Season two of The Gentlemen will premiere on Netflix on Thursday, September 3.
Netflix has also confirmed that the series will return for a third season. Ritchie previously spoke about the decision to continue the story, saying: “The ambition of The Gentlemen has accelerated, the world has expanded and the consequences carry weight. A third season felt inevitable, and I’m looking forward to pushing the boundaries of it further.”
Meghan Markle casting rumours addressed
The new season has also been surrounded by speculation about whether Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, could eventually appear in The Gentlemen.
The former Suits actress stepped away from acting after marrying Prince Harry in 2018. The couple later relinquished their royal duties and moved to Los Angeles.
Reports recently claimed that Meghan could return to acting following speculation that she and Harry were preparing to move back to the UK. She was reportedly being considered for a role in the third season of The Gentlemen, with the character described as a temptress.
However, those reports were subsequently challenged by royal author Tina Brown.
Brown claimed over the weekend that Meghan’s proposed role was no longer going ahead, attributing the decision to what she described as public backlash over reports that the Duchess had been in talks to appear in the Netflix series.
Writing on X, Brown said: “I have heard that Meghan Markle’s role in Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series The Gentlemen is OFF. Public backlash was too fierce. This does not bode well for Meghan’s acting comeback in the UK.”
Meghan’s reported involvement had been linked to speculation surrounding her and Prince Harry’s return to the UK with their children, Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five. The couple have reportedly found a family home and schools for their children in Britain.
Harry is also said to be keen for his father, King Charles, to build a closer relationship with his grandchildren. The King was pictured on Saturday driving on the A93 near Braemar.
For now, though, the confirmed development is the return of Eddie and Susie, with season two of The Gentlemen arriving on Netflix on September 3.
