“Absolute Class”: Christian Horner Praises Lewis Hamilton for Dignity After Agonizing Abu Dhabi 2021 Heartbreak

Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner has offered a striking tribute to long-time rival Lewis Hamilton, commending the seven-time World Champion for the exceptional grace and poise he displayed in the immediate aftermath of the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Hamilton was mere laps away from securing an unprecedented eighth world championship at the Yas Marina Circuit before a late crash by Williams driver Nicholas Latifi triggered a Safety Car period and an unprecedented sequence of decisions by then-race director Michael Masi.
Masi permitted only the lapped cars separating leader Hamilton and second-place Max Verstappen to unlap themselves before abruptly recalling the Safety Car for a single-lap shootout. On fresh soft tires, Verstappen overtook Hamilton on the final lap to seize his maiden world title, sparking intense debate across the motorsport community.
Horner Reflects on Hamilton’s Demeanor

While Horner famously lobbied race control in the closing laps of that title-deciding race, he admitted during an appearance on the Up To Speed podcast that Hamilton’s immediate reaction on the podium left a lasting impression on him.
“What I was super impressed with, his world has fallen apart,” Horner said. “He had the charisma within him to acknowledge and congratulate Max, to congratulate me and stand up there on that podium. It must have been immensely, immensely hard for him in that moment.”
Despite the shock of losing the championship in the final moments of the season, Hamilton conducted post-race interviews, shared words with Verstappen, and carried himself with complete composure before the podium ceremony.
Tribute to Anthony Hamilton
Horner also singled out Hamilton’s father, Anthony Hamilton, who visited the Red Bull garage shortly after the checkered flag to personally congratulate Horner and Verstappen before Mercedes lodged its formal protests with the FIA stewards.
“And I have to say his father as well congratulated myself, members of the team, and then all hell let loose in the stewards’ office afterwards,” Horner added. “You could not have scripted that finish.”
While the dramatic events of Abu Dhabi 2021 remain one of the most polarizing climaxes in modern Formula 1 history, Horner’s retrospective remarks underscore the enduring respect between two fierce rivals during one of sports’ most heartbreaking defeats.
