Max Verstappen has shown yet again that his racing instincts extend far beyond the Formula 1 grid, fighting back from 24th place in a rival racing format to make a statement about his ability behind the wheel. Starting that far down meant he had a mountain to climb, but Verstappen’s comeback put his racecraft, determination and competitive edge firmly on display. While the spotlight often follows his F1 battles, this performance offered another reminder of why he commands so much respect in motorsport. Starting 24th was the challenge — the way Verstappen responded was the real story.

Max Verstappen mounted a remarkable recovery drive from 24th to ninth at the GT World Challenge, after his podium ambitions were scuppered by a drive-through penalty.

Just a week on from securing his second successive Formula One triumph at the Singapore Grand Prix, the four-time world champion was back behind the wheel, this time competing in a three-hour endurance race in Portugal.

Verstappen’s team-mate, British driver Ben Barnicoat, put in a promising opening stint, climbing five positions from 13th on the grid.

He then handed over to fellow Briton Chris Lulham, who advanced to sixth place at the Portimao circuit in the Algarve – a track set to feature on the F1 calendar next season.

However, Lulham was handed a drive-through penalty after sending Luca Stolz into a spin during a battle for fifth place.

Lulham duly served his punishment before Verstappen took over driving duties, though the Dutchman’s outfit now found themselves out of contention and languishing in 24th – with just 45 minutes remaining on the clock.

Undeterred, Verstappen stormed through to 15th with 15 minutes to go, before pulling off a further six places in an impressive late cameo to cross the line in ninth.

The Dutch star will now be targeting a hat-trick of F1 wins when he returns to his Red Bull at next weekend’s United States Grand Prix in Austin.
