Celtic Thunder has paid a moving tribute to late principal singer George Donaldson, capturing the unforgettable moments that made him a beloved figure among fans and fellow members alike.

Donaldson, who tragically passed away from a massive heart attack on 12 March 2014 at the age of 46, left behind his wife, Carolyn, and daughter, Sarah, then 13, whom he described as “the light of my life.” Born and raised in Glasgow, Donaldson was a self-taught musician, proficient on both guitar and flute, and inspired from an early age by his father Bernard’s love of Celtic music. One of his proudest moments came performing for 65,000 fans, including his father, at the Celtic Park opening match in 2000.
Joining Celtic Thunder in 2007 after a successful audition for producer Sharon Browne, Donaldson quickly became an integral part of the show’s celebration of Irish and Scottish heritage.
Known affectionately as the “steadfast” one, he was the group’s sole Scotsman and only married family man, appearing in all nine Celtic Thunder concert specials and on every CD and DVD release, including last year’s Mythology.
Donaldson’s influence extended beyond Celtic Thunder, with a thriving solo career in Glasgow’s folk scene. He released two acclaimed solo albums, The White Rose in 2011 and The World In My Mind in 2013, and won the Irish Music Awards consecutively in 2011 and 2012.
His voice and artistry left an indelible mark on Celtic music, celebrated internationally during tours and performances at events such as St. Patrick’s Day parades in Chicago, Boston, New York, and even for President and Mrs. Obama at the White House.
