MICHAEL SCHUMACHER’S WIFE REVEALS THE FAMILY SECRET BEHIND THEIR LOVE STORY — ‘MY MOTHER WAS COMPLETELY AGAINST IT’

Michael Schumacher’s wife, Corinna, has offered a rare and deeply personal glimpse into their relationship, revealing how her mother initially disapproved of the future Formula One legend — and sharing the private memories that still bring both laughter and tears.
In the new documentary Schumacher ’94: The Birth of a Legend, Corinna reflects on their romance in the early 1990s, long before Schumacher became a seven-time world champion. Her recollections range from a song that remains painfully emotional to an amusing story about the unexpected gifts that arrived in his fan mail.
The documentary also offers a rare opportunity to hear Corinna speak about the man behind the racing legend, whose life changed dramatically after his skiing accident in December 2013.
‘MY MOTHER WAS COMPLETELY AGAINST IT’

Looking back on the beginning of their relationship, Corinna revealed that her mother was far from convinced Schumacher was the right man for her.
At the time, Michael was devoted to karting and intensely competitive — qualities that apparently did little to reassure Corinna’s mother.
“My mother was completely against it. Michael was always at the go-kart track and was always pushing others out,” Corinna recalled.
She explained that her mother would point to the way Schumacher behaved at the track, joking about his competitive nature and the strict attitude surrounding the family’s karting operation.
“My mother always said: ‘Look at Schumacher! They have a go-kart track at home, they throw out anyone who does anything wrong, and now he’s throwing people out!’”
Her mother would repeatedly invoke his name, Corinna remembered: “Schumacher, Schumacher.”
The anecdote offers a glimpse of Schumacher before his rise to global fame, when his determination and competitive instincts were already apparent to those around him.

THE SONG THAT STILL MAKES CORINNA CRY
Not every memory from the couple’s early years is funny.
Corinna also revealed that Paula Abdul’s 1991 hit Rush Rush held a special place in their relationship.
“That was our song back then,” she said.
Decades later, the music still brings back powerful emotions.
“When I hear it today and I’m in the car, I cry to myself.”
The simple admission offers a moving reminder of the life they shared before Schumacher’s accident — and how ordinary reminders of the past can carry extraordinary meaning.
THE UNEXPECTED FAN MAIL THAT BECAME AN INSIDE JOKE

Corinna also shared a lighter story about Schumacher’s life as a rising racing star.
According to her, he regularly received underwear from a young female fan named Jutta, who included the items with her letters.
“He received a lot of it. Also from a young girl who always sent underwear along with his mail. Her name was Jutta,” Corinna said.
The situation eventually became a running joke, with Schumacher adopting a particular phrase in response.
“At some point, ‘Come on, Jutta,’ became his standard phrase.”
The story reveals a playful side of the champion, far removed from the pressure and intensity of the Formula One paddock.
‘MICHAEL IS HERE. DIFFERENT, BUT HE’S HERE’
Since Schumacher suffered a severe brain injury in a skiing accident on December 29, 2013, his family has maintained strict privacy around his condition.
Corinna remains his primary carer, supported by medical professionals, including nurses and therapists. Detailed updates about his health have been limited, in keeping with the family’s long-standing wish to protect his private life.
In the 2021 documentary Schumacher, Corinna spoke about the challenges they faced and the determination to continue supporting him at home.
“Michael is here. Different, but he’s here, and that gives us strength, I find,” she said at the time. “He still shows me how strong he is every day.”
She explained that the family continued to focus on therapy, comfort and preserving their bond.
“We live together at home. We do therapy. We do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure he’s comfortable. And to simply make him feel our family, our bond.”
Her words reflected the commitment she and their family have maintained throughout the years since the accident.
WHY CORINNA CONTINUES TO PROTECT HIS PRIVACY
Corinna has also made clear that protecting Schumacher’s privacy remains central to how the family lives.
“No matter what, I will do everything I can. We all will,” she said in the 2021 documentary.
She added that the family was trying to carry on in the way Michael would have wanted, while continuing to support him.
“‘Private is private,’ as he always said,” Corinna explained. “It’s very important to me that he can continue to enjoy his private life as much as possible.”
She concluded with a line that captures the family’s approach since the accident: “Michael always protected us, and now we are protecting Michael.”
A CHAMPION REMEMBERED BEYOND THE TRACK
Schumacher ’94: The Birth of a Legend revisits the breakthrough 1994 season that brought Michael his first Formula One world championship with Benetton and set him on the path to one of the sport’s most remarkable careers.
But Corinna’s recollections reach beyond the trophies and the racing statistics. They reveal a young man who loved karting, made his future wife laugh, inspired strong opinions from her family and shared memories that remain deeply personal decades later.
For fans, Schumacher will always be remembered as one of Formula One’s greatest champions. Through Corinna’s words, the documentary also offers a glimpse of the husband and partner whose place in her life remains far more personal than his sporting legacy alone can convey.
