Craig Melvin’s ‘Today’ Show Absence Finally Explained — The Heartwarming Reason He Took A Day Off Has A Special Meaning
Craig Melvin had a meaningful reason for missing a day of work on NBC’s Today show, and the explanation left his colleagues celebrating a special achievement.
The presenter was absent from the Thursday, October 8, episode, with Willie Geist stepping in alongside Savannah Guthrie at the anchors’ desk. The show did not initially explain why Melvin was away, but Dylan Dreyer revealed the reason during Friday’s broadcast.
Rather than taking time off for an ordinary break, Melvin had travelled to his hometown of Columbia, South Carolina, to receive an important community honour.
Dylan Dreyer Reveals Why Craig Melvin Was Missing
During the third hour of Today on October 9, Dreyer gave viewers an update on her colleague and congratulated him on being recognised with the inaugural Ripples of Impact medal.
“We do wanna give a shout-out to our buddy Craig this morning,” she said, noting how frequently Melvin represents his hometown on the national morning show.
Dreyer explained that the award was being presented for the first time by Columbia’s mayor to honour people who have made a difference in their community through leadership and commitment.
Calling the recognition a “big deal,” she praised Melvin for the impact he has made and for continually highlighting his South Carolina roots.
“You are making a difference, and you have an impact, and you talk about South Carolina all the time,” she told him.
Melvin was clearly touched by the tribute, describing Dreyer’s words as “very sweet.” He also explained that while receiving the award was an honour, the people recognised alongside him made the occasion particularly meaningful.
Why The Award Meant So Much To Him
Melvin revealed that several people he had admired while growing up in Columbia were among the honorees. One of them was basketball star A’ja Wilson, who could not attend because she was involved in the playoffs.
He also recalled being honoured alongside people who had helped shape his hometown, including one of the first Jewish businessmen in the community.
For Melvin, the ceremony was about more than receiving a medal. It offered an opportunity to reconnect with the people and community that had influenced his life.
“The people who sort of shaped me and molded me, they were all there, and it was nice,” he said, expressing his gratitude to Columbia for the recognition.
A Rare Day Away From The ‘Today’ Desk
Melvin had previously explained why attending the ceremony in person mattered to him. Speaking to local outlet WIS News 10, he said he did not often get to miss work and wanted to travel home to accept the award and thank the city himself.
He also used the occasion to acknowledge people who had supported him throughout his career, including his first news director and Columbia Mayor Daniel Rickenmann, whom he said he had known for 20 years.
The inaugural Ripples of Impact ceremony took place on Wednesday, October 7. Other honorees included Wilson, community figures, charitable organisations and South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster.
Melvin joined Today in 2018 after working in local news, including at WIS-TV in Columbia. His latest recognition brought him back to the place where his career and personal connections first took shape.
Although his absence from the morning show initially went unexplained, the reason turned out to be a celebration of his hometown ties and the people who helped make him who he is today.
