The details fans never knew 👇

A father and his two sons, performing as The Sound, delivered one of the most memorable auditions of the night on America’s Got Talent with a moving rendition of John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads.”

The trio appeared on the July 21 episode of AGT Season 21, where performers from across the United States are competing for the show’s $1 million prize.

Before their performance, Rob, Levi, and Jacob Mills introduced themselves to the judges. The family is originally from Romeo, Michigan, and has since moved to Nashville, Tennessee. Rob explained that he raised his sons listening to classic country music, and that lifelong influence helped create the harmony driven sound they perform today.

Their audition opened with the audience clapping along as the three began singing the famous chorus a cappella. The blend of their voices and their calm, natural chemistry on stage immediately drew a strong reaction from the theater.

Howie Mandel and Mel B stood up to applaud the performance, and Mel B described the harmonies as “perfection.”

Sofia Vergara told the trio she believed “America is going to fall in love with you,” while Simon Cowell praised their vocals and the obvious bond between the family members. He added that the performance felt “safe and nice” and encouraged them to take bigger creative risks if they advance further in the competition.

The audition ended with four yes votes, officially sending The Sound to the next round.

The group is not entirely new to performing for a large audience. In May 2025, they began uploading videos of themselves singing in a hotel stairwell, and the clips quickly spread across social media. Since then, they have built a combined audience of nearly one million followers, and their stairwell series has reportedly been viewed more than 100 million times.

Levi Mills said the response has been especially meaningful because it showed them that many viewers still connect with “family, faith, and good music.”

“We live in a fast paced world,” he said. “It’s refreshing to slow down and appreciate the simple things. That’s what we’re doing.”

What started as a performance of a beloved country classic ended with an entire theater singing along and a family band from Michigan taking a major step forward on one of television’s biggest stages.
