The 1% Club Contestants Stumped By Tricky Four-Letter Word Puzzle — Can You Find The Missing Answer Before Lee Mack Reveals It?
A deceptively simple word puzzle on ITV’s The 1% Club left several contestants struggling to find the correct answer, despite having just four familiar letters to work with.
The popular quiz show, hosted by comedian Lee Mack since its launch in April 2022, is known for testing contestants’ logic, reasoning and common sense rather than relying on traditional general knowledge questions. But sometimes, it is the shortest challenges that prove surprisingly difficult.
In a repeated episode from the show’s second series, contestants faced a word-sequence question that appeared straightforward at first. However, the challenge quickly became a test of who could recognise the hidden pattern before the countdown reached zero.
The question was:
“Which four-letter word is missing from this list?”
The words displayed on screen were:
- SPOT
- OPTS
- POTS
- STOP
- TOPS
- ????
Contestants had to find another valid four-letter word that could be formed using exactly the same letters: S, P, O and T.
It sounded easy enough. After all, the letters were already provided, and several possible combinations were visible. Yet finding the remaining word under pressure was not quite as straightforward as it seemed.
Six Contestants Failed To Spot The Missing Word
The puzzle was presented as a 20% question, meaning it was designed to challenge a significant proportion of the population.
With only 30 seconds to work out the answer, contestants had little time to experiment with different letter combinations. Six of the remaining players failed to get it right, showing how easily a seemingly simple sequence can catch people off guard.
The appeal of The 1% Club lies in precisely these moments. Viewers at home can pause, study the question and try to solve it alongside the contestants, often discovering that recognising a pattern is much harder when the clock is ticking.
Lee Mack Finally Reveals The Answer
After the countdown ended, Lee Mack revealed that the missing word was POST.
He explained that it was the only other word that could be made from those four letters to complete the sequence.
The solution made sense once it appeared on screen, but for the contestants who had struggled to find it, those 30 seconds had clearly been more challenging than expected.
Would You Have Got It Right?
Unlike traditional quiz shows, The 1% Club focuses on questions involving logic, patterns and everyday reasoning. Its challenges begin with questions that most people should be able to answer and gradually become more difficult, eventually reaching the question designed for just 1% of the population.
That format has made playing along at home a major part of the show’s appeal. Viewers get the opportunity to test themselves against the contestants and see whether they can recognise the answer before Lee provides it.
This particular four-letter challenge is a perfect example of how a small puzzle can create a surprisingly tense moment.
So, be honest: did you spot POST straight away, or would you have been among the six contestants who missed it?
