Sir Brian May of Queen, the astrophysicist and musician, has a lesson for the visual learners out there.
For the visual learners out there, Sir Brian May of Queen and member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, has a lesson for those who may not be seeing the point in all the hubbub about why AI is, you know, bad. The astrophysicist/guitarist posted to his social media a render he had a generative AI tool create of Queen‘s eighth studio album, The Game.
“I just had to share this with you guys. I asked Meta AI to show me what the cover of The Game album looked like. This is what it gave me! Good job, eh?” Lacking in any kind of perspective, artistic eye, depth, or story, the rendering was… poor, in the nicest of terms – as well as just, flat-out incorrect. There’s also a fifth member of Queen on the cover.
Plenty of artists have gone on record at this point to either speak against or for the use of generative AI in the creative fields. However, the one concern that seems most prevalent in the side-by-side of Meta AI’s render of The Game‘s album artwork and the original is that AI has no heart. No depth. No soul. No creativity. No eye that is caught by a specific angle. It can’t feel.
The Queen guitarist continued in the caption, “So this is the kind of intelligence that will soon be ruling the world??! Well, great. Maybe this is the time to realise we don’t actually need AI!!!”
May‘s tone changed as he wrote, “But I’m now very serious. I believe the price we are about to pay for this ‘inevitable’ development is way too high. We must not allow these hideous Data Centres to be built in the UK. They will destroy our beautiful country, like they are already destroying beautiful America.” He then addressed the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Andy Burham at the very end. “Dear Andy — you must stop it now. Before it’s too late.” And then signed the entire caption with, “Bri.”
