MORE THAN 50 YEARS AFTER “WILD HORSES” FIRST CAPTURED HEARTS, MICK JAGGER SHARED IT WITH FLORENCE WELCH—AND TWO GENERATIONS OF BRITISH ROCK SUDDENLY COLLIDED ON ONE STAGE.

The Rolling Stones have performed “Wild Horses” countless times across more than five decades, but one unforgettable night in London gave the beloved ballad a completely different kind of electricity.

During the band’s concert at London Stadium, Mick Jagger surprised the crowd by welcoming Florence Welch to the stage for a passionate performance of the Sticky Fingers classic.

The Florence + the Machine singer had already appeared earlier in the evening as an opening act, but her return alongside Jagger transformed the night into something far more memorable.

From the moment Welch joined Jagger, the performance felt less like a conventional guest appearance and more like a musical conversation between two generations of British rock.

The pair traded verses before bringing their voices together for the choruses. As the song unfolded, they repeatedly locked eyes, moved toward one another and eventually held hands, adding an unexpectedly intimate quality to one of the Stones’ most emotional songs.

Jagger brought the weathered restraint that has defined the track for decades, while Welch answered with the soaring, dramatic vocal style that has become her trademark.

Rather than attempting to imitate the original recording, she brought her own personality to the song — and Jagger appeared more than willing to meet her halfway.

The result was a version of “Wild Horses” that felt simultaneously familiar and completely fresh.

A Collaboration Years in the Making

The appearance was especially fitting because Welch has never hidden the Rolling Stones’ influence on her own music.

Before the London Stadium concert, she described performing alongside the legendary band as a “huge honour,” calling the Stones one of Florence + the Machine’s biggest influences.

And this wasn’t the first time Jagger and Welch had shared a stage.

Back in November 2012, Welch joined the Rolling Stones during another London concert, stepping into the formidable guest-vocalist role on “Gimme Shelter.”

Six years later, their reunion offered something very different.

Where “Gimme Shelter” demanded explosive vocal power, “Wild Horses” gave the pair space for vulnerability, restraint and chemistry.

Another Standout Moment From the No Filter Tour

The performance arrived during the European stretch of the Rolling Stones’ No Filter Tour, which had already attracted attention for mixing enormous hits with less predictable selections.

After kicking off in Dublin on May 17, the Stones incorporated rarities including “Neighbors” and “The Worst,” blues numbers such as “Just Your Fool” and “Ride ’Em on Down,” alongside the classics audiences had come to hear.

But in London, one of those familiar classics became the evening’s defining surprise.

With Welch standing beside Jagger, “Wild Horses” became more than another song in a Rolling Stones setlist. It became a meeting between an artist who helped define British rock and a singer from a later generation deeply influenced by the world he helped create.

For a few extraordinary minutes, Jagger and Welch weren’t simply performing the same song.

They were completely lost inside it.
