A new addition to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s household drew attention in August 2019 after their latest nanny was photographed travelling with the family following a private holiday in France.
The woman, who was caring for their newborn son Archie, was the couple’s third nanny in the first few months after his birth. TMZ reported that she was hired through an agency and was a Black British woman, describing the appointment as another example of multiculturalism within the Royal Family.
A new face in Archie’s childcare team
The nanny was photographed stepping off a private jet with Harry, Meghan and Archie as the family returned from a stay at Sir Elton John’s estate in France.
The sighting was notable because it marked the first time one of Archie’s nannies had been publicly identified in connection with the family.
According to sources cited by TMZ, the woman had been hired around two months earlier. By that point, Harry and Meghan had already gone through two other nannies during Archie’s first six weeks.
One of those earlier childcare workers was described as a night nurse.
The identities and backgrounds of those first two nannies were not publicly known, meaning there was no confirmation that they were both white. TMZ specifically noted that either or both could also have been Black.
A different approach to royal family life
The appointment attracted attention partly because of Harry and Meghan’s public advocacy for race and gender equality.
The couple had spoken about issues surrounding diversity, making the background of their new childcare professional particularly noteworthy.
The development also stood in contrast to the publicly known arrangements surrounding Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children, whose nannies had been white, according to the original report.
Rather than presenting the appointment as proof of a wider transformation, however, the available information simply showed that Archie’s latest nanny represented a different background within the Sussex household.
Most importantly, the couple appeared satisfied with the arrangement.
Sources told TMZ that things were going well and that Harry and Meghan were happy with their third nanny.
The private flight that sparked attention
The nanny’s appearance also came at a moment when Harry and Meghan were facing criticism over their use of private aviation.
The family had returned from a holiday at Elton John’s French estate by private jet, bringing renewed scrutiny because Harry and Meghan had also been vocal about environmental issues.
Their use of private aircraft had attracted negative attention in the press, creating a separate conversation around the couple’s travel choices.
Elton John publicly defended the Sussexes over the criticism, arguing that their visit to his home had been intended to give the family a peaceful break following a demanding period.
The singer also said the flight had been offset through a contribution supporting renewable energy.
For the nanny, however, the photographs simply provided an unusual glimpse into the private arrangements surrounding Archie’s early months.
