Colin Jost and Michael Che Call Jeopardy! Legend Ken Jennings for $500,000 Question — But His Unexpected Answer Leaves Them Facing a Huge Decision

Saturday Night Live stars Colin Jost and Michael Che turned to one of television’s most famous trivia experts when they found themselves facing a $500,000 question on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?
The Weekend Update duo called Jeopardy! host Ken Jennings for help, hoping his extraordinary knowledge would guide them toward the correct answer.
However, even Jennings admitted he was uncertain, leaving the comedians to decide whether to risk a substantial amount of money for charity.
A $500,000 Question Leaves Both Comedians Stumped
Jost and Che had successfully climbed the prize ladder when host Jimmy Kimmel presented a question about legendary opera singer Luciano Pavarotti.
The question asked which small object Pavarotti liked to keep in his pocket during performances as a good luck charm.
Their four choices were a pebble, a 20 lire coin, a lock of his mother’s hair, or a nail.

Neither comedian knew the answer.
Che remarked on how unusual the options seemed, while Jost joked that Pavarotti might have carried a nail so he could say he had nailed his performance.
With $500,000 at stake, they decided to use their Phone-a-Friend lifeline.
Their chosen expert was Ken Jennings.
Ken Jennings Admits He Doesn’t Know the Answer
Jennings appeared surprised to discover how far Jost and Che had progressed in the competition.
But when they explained the Pavarotti question, the Jeopardy! host admitted he had never encountered that particular piece of trivia.
“I’ve never heard this fact, you guys,” Jennings told them.
He suggested that a nail seemed like a plausible choice but emphasized that he was only guessing.
Importantly, he warned the pair against risking their money based on his uncertain instinct.
As the 30-second phone call ended, Jost shouted, “I love you anyway!”
The comedians continued joking about their predicament, with Che pretending to consult his own pocket for guidance.
Yet beneath the laughter was a serious decision involving hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity.
Jost and Che Make a Difficult Decision
Rather than gamble on an answer they could not confidently identify, Jost and Che chose to walk away.
Their decision secured $250,000 for their selected charities, Food Bank for NYC and Answer the Call.
An incorrect response would have reduced their winnings to $32,000.
After the decision was made, the comedians revealed which answers they would have selected.
Che admitted his instinct had been to choose the nail, while Jost said he would have guessed the pebble.
Kimmel then revealed the correct answer.
It was a nail.
Che’s instinct — and Jennings’ tentative suggestion — had been right all along.
Viewers React to Ken Jennings’ Surprise Appearance
Jennings’ involvement delighted viewers who recognized him from Jeopardy!.
Some commenters on Reddit said they would also choose Jennings as their Phone-a-Friend lifeline because of his extensive trivia knowledge.
Others wondered whether Jost and Che should have trusted his guess and continued playing.
However, Jennings had clearly stated that he did not know the answer, making the comedians’ cautious decision understandable.
The appearance also marked another connection between Jennings and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?
During the previous season, he teamed up with actor Matt Damon and won $1 million for charity.
This time, he could not offer the certainty Jost and Che needed.
Although the pair missed the opportunity to double their winnings, their decision ensured that two charities received a combined $250,000.
In the end, the most remarkable twist was that Ken Jennings had suggested the correct answer — but his own uncertainty convinced the comedians that walking away was the safer choice.
