Kid Rock Takes His Music Somewhere Deeply Personal With ‘John 1:17 (Jesus Is King)’ — Turning a Biblical Passage Into a Powerful Declaration of Faith Unlike Almost Anything Fans Have Heard From Him Before

Kid Rock Embraces His Faith With a New Christian Album — and One 2 A.M. Song Became Deeply Personal

Kid Rock releases new Christian song

Kid Rock is taking his music in a deeply personal direction, putting his Christian faith at the center of a new album that blends the rock, country and hip-hop sounds that have defined his career.

The 55-year-old singer, whose real name is Robert Ritchie, revealed that his upcoming Christian album, Halfway To Jesus, will arrive on October 17.

But the project didn’t begin with plans for an entire record.

According to Kid Rock, the inspiration grew after he reworked Cody Johnson’s “‘Til You Can’t,” adding a new verse that transformed his rendition into an expression of his faith.

The response convinced him there was more he wanted to say.

“I started writing more songs,” he explained. “I decided to write the songs that I kind of wanted to. Celebrate Jesus and my faith which are rock ‘n’ roll, country, and hip hop.”

His Christian Version of ‘Til You Can’t Became a No. 1 Hit

Kid Rock first performed his version of “‘Til You Can’t” during the Turning Point USA alternate Super Bowl halftime show.

The studio recording followed on February 9.

According to the supplied report, it reached No. 1 on the Hot Christian Songs chart, while also climbing to No. 14 on Hot Country Songs and No. 9 on Hot Rock & Alternative Songs.

That success was followed by more faith-centered songwriting.

One of those songs arrived unexpectedly in the middle of the night.

Kid Rock recalled waking at approximately 2 a.m. with an idea. About 30 minutes later, he said, the song was written.

He titled it “James 1:17 (Jesus Is King).”

The lyrics look back on a life of wandering, mistakes and material success before arriving at the realization that faith had given him something money couldn’t provide.

James 1:17 Carries a Personal Meaning

The biblical reference behind the title isn’t random.

Kid Rock previously explained that he felt particularly drawn to James 1:17 because his middle name is James and his birthday falls on January 17.

The verse describes every good and perfect gift as coming from above.

Kid Rock announced the song on September 30, with its release following on October 1.

He also teased a music video featuring people who held special significance both to the track and to the larger album.

When the video arrived, that promise became clear.

A 17-Year-Old Fan Was Given a Special Place Behind the Drums

Kid Rock dedicated the video to two people facing serious health battles.

One was Jimmie Bones, his longtime keyboardist, who has been battling ALS.

The other was Kalvin Lynch, a 17-year-old fan diagnosed with DIPG, described in the supplied report as an aggressive and inoperable brain tumor.

Kalvin’s Make-A-Wish request was to play drums with Kid Rock.

The music video gave him that opportunity.

When the band begins playing, the drummer is revealed to be Kalvin.

The video’s storyline follows the busking musician embracing Christianity while his girlfriend initially remains skeptical. As the story develops, she also becomes a believer and is ultimately shown being baptized among the crowd.

The album artwork reinforces the record’s spiritual theme, depicting Kid Rock climbing a mountain toward a cross while the devil remains below.

It’s a striking visual representation of the direction he says his life and songwriting have taken.

The project also follows the personal approach of his “‘Til You Can’t” video, which featured holographic images of people close to him, including his son Robert James Ritchie Jr. and granddaughter Skye.

For an artist whose career has moved freely between rap, hard rock, Southern rock and country, Halfway To Jesus doesn’t abandon those musical identities.

Instead, Kid Rock says he’s using them to express something increasingly important to him.

A song inspired by faith grew into more songs, a new album and a deeply personal video that placed a seriously ill teenage fan behind the drum kit. For Kid Rock, this new chapter isn’t about changing the music that made him famous — it’s about changing what he wants that music to say.
