Paul McCartney Shares Rare Glimpse Into His Quiet Life With Wife Nancy Shevell: “We’re Pretty Much Like Any Other Normal Couple”

For someone whose career has unfolded in front of millions, Paul McCartney says some of his happiest moments with wife Nancy Shevell are surprisingly ordinary.

The 82-year-old Beatles legend recently offered a rare glimpse into what life looks like when the couple has nowhere to be, no professional commitments and an opportunity to simply spend time together at home.

Responding to a fan named Joan as part of the “You Gave Me the Answer” feature on his official website, McCartney was asked what he and Shevell, 65, do to relax and which interests they share.

His answer was refreshingly simple.

“We chat and catch up with each other. We eat lunch or dinner. Well, any meal really, as we love cooking,” McCartney explained.

Their evenings can be equally low-key.

“Sometimes we will watch something on TV together, and I always read before bed, usually a biography, while Nancy finishes watching a series.”

Then came the line that perhaps best summed up their home life: “We’re pretty much like any other normal couple!”

A relationship that began in the Hamptons

McCartney and Shevell first met in the summer of 2007 while staying at their respective homes in the Hamptons.

By 2009, a source told PEOPLE that the pair were “clearly well-suited, well-matched.” They became engaged in 2011 and married later that same year.

Despite McCartney’s extraordinary public life, his comments suggest their relationship is grounded in everyday routines — talking, sharing meals, cooking and relaxing together in front of the television.

But that doesn’t mean romance has disappeared from the picture.

McCartney admits he likes to “overdo” romance

In 2023, McCartney revealed that when Valentine’s Day arrives, he has a tendency to take celebrations considerably further than necessary.

“There’s not just one card, there are cards hidden around the room, and sometimes things even spill into the next day — it’s completely silly,” he said.

That enthusiasm isn’t limited to Valentine’s Day.

“If there’s an excuse to have some fun, I overdo it!” McCartney explained, adding that Christmas receives similar treatment, particularly when it comes to decorating the tree with lights and fairy lights.

Behind those playful gestures, however, McCartney has also spoken about the more serious role he wants to play in his marriage.

“If there’s a problem, I like to be the guy that will lend some strength to it,” he previously said.

For McCartney, being someone his wife can depend upon is important.

“I’m always very happy to be the person Nancy relies on, and to be her strength when she goes through tough times.”

A quieter side of one of music’s biggest stars

The picture McCartney paints of his marriage is far removed from stadium concerts, recording studios and decades of Beatlemania.

At home with Shevell, there is cooking, conversation, television and a biography before bed — ordinary rituals that appear to offer the couple space away from their demanding public lives.

McCartney was previously married to Linda Eastman from 1969 until her death in 1998. He later married Heather Mills in 2002, with that marriage ending in 2007.

He and Shevell have now been married since 2011, and judging from McCartney’s own description, their private time together doesn’t require anything particularly extravagant.

Sometimes, even for one of the most famous musicians in the world, a good meal, a conversation and a quiet night at home are enough.
