Paul McCartney may be one of the most famous musicians in the world, but away from the stage, he is also the father of five children. Among them is his only son, James McCartney, who followed his father into music while spending much of his life navigating the complicated reality of carrying one of pop culture’s most recognizable surnames.

Born in 1977 to Paul and his first wife, Linda McCartney, James grew up largely away from the celebrity spotlight. His life has included profound loss, a difficult period of estrangement from his father and, eventually, a reconciliation that brought them closer than ever.

Today, James is a musician in his own right, with several albums and collaborations behind him — including a particularly notable song written with John Lennon’s son, Sean Ono Lennon.

James McCartney was born on September 12, 1977, in London, the fourth child in Paul and Linda McCartney’s family and their only son.

By then, the couple were already raising three daughters. Mary Anna McCartney was born in August 1969, followed by Stella Nina McCartney in September 1971. Linda also had a daughter, Heather Louise McCartney, from a previous marriage. Heather, born in December 1962, was officially adopted by Paul after he and Linda married in 1969.

James remained the youngest member of the family for many years. That changed in October 2003, when Paul and his second wife, Heather Mills, welcomed daughter Beatrice Milly McCartney.

He grew up with four sisters

Despite having one of the biggest stars in music as a father, James remembers his upbringing as surprisingly grounded.

He and his three older sisters were raised at Blossom Wood Farm, the family’s 160-acre property in East Sussex, outside London.

“It was a lovely childhood,” James told the Daily Mail in 2013. “I was shy but enjoyed school. I was protected by my family.”

Paul and Linda also made the decision to send their children to public rather than private schools.

“My dad had a normal upbringing, and I think he then wanted to introduce a normal upbringing to us as well, so we went to a comprehensive school,” James told The Irish Mirror in 2013.

Of course, there was no completely escaping the McCartney name.

“Everyone at school knew who my dad was,” he acknowledged.

Creativity eventually became a common thread among the siblings. Heather became a potter, Mary pursued photography and Stella built a career in fashion.

James has spoken proudly about what his family members have accomplished, saying he was both “proud” and “truly humbled” by their achievements and their impact on the world.

Linda McCartney’s death profoundly affected him

The McCartney family suffered an enormous loss in 1998 when Linda died from breast cancer at the age of 56. James was just 20.

Years later, he remained deeply emotional when speaking about his mother.

“She was amazing,” he told Rolling Stone in 2013. “I always feel honored to meet people who ever met my Mum. It means a lot to me.”

Her death also marked the beginning of a difficult chapter in his own life. James admitted that he struggled with grief, drinking and drugs during that period.

“I went off the rails a little bit,” he told The Irish Mirror.

He described it as his “slightly dark period,” during which he immersed himself in heavier music from acts including Nirvana and Marilyn Manson while trying to find his own identity.

James and Paul were estranged for a period

Another difficult period followed when Paul married Heather Mills in 2002.

Still dealing with Linda’s death, James struggled with his father’s new marriage, and the relationship between father and son became strained.

“I went a long time without seeing Dad. We drifted apart,” James recalled in 2013. Although they would occasionally speak by phone, months could pass between conversations and they spent a significant amount of time without seeing each other.

“It was sad for both of us,” he said.

James later acknowledged that Mills was partly connected to their estrangement, while also recognizing that his grief over Linda’s death and the prospect of accepting someone new into the family had been difficult.

Eventually, father and son repaired their relationship.

“We drifted quite far apart — it was a difficult period,” James told The Irish Mirror. “The estrangement was partly because of Heather. It was difficult because of Mum’s death and then moving on, having a new mother.”

But he also made clear just how dramatically things had changed between them.

“[He] is my dad and he is also my best friend.”

James similarly told the Daily Mail that he had deliberately separated himself from his family for a time but later wanted to “immerse” himself in them again.

Music eventually became James’ own career

Given his upbringing, James’ interest in music came naturally.

“I think having a father like Dad it was hard not to get into music,” he told The Irish Mirror.

He taught himself guitar and piano as a child and began experimenting with songwriting. Eventually, he performed guitar with his father’s touring band and contributed to Paul’s recordings.

James played drums and guitar on tracks from Paul’s solo albums Flaming Pie and Driving Rain and also shared songwriting credits with his father.

Yet launching his own career was another matter.

“It’s hard to live up to The Beatles,” James admitted.

For a time, he even performed under an alias in an attempt to establish himself without immediately attracting comparisons to his father.

“I started out playing under an alias because I wanted to start quietly,” he explained.

James began publicly releasing his own material in 2010 with his debut EP, Available Light. His first full-length album, Me, followed in 2013, while his second, The Blackberry Train, arrived in 2016. Both albums were co-produced by Paul.

In 2024, James released another album, Beautiful Nothing.

Throughout his career, his father has remained supportive.

“He gives me a lot of encouragement,” James told Rolling Stone. “It’s fun.”

James collaborated with John Lennon’s son

One of James’ most attention-grabbing musical collaborations arrived in 2024 when he teamed up with Sean Ono Lennon, the only son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

The pairing inevitably carried enormous Beatles significance, bringing together the sons of the legendary Lennon-McCartney songwriting partnership.

On April 12, 2024, James announced that he and Sean had co-written a new single titled “Primrose Hill.”

“I am so very excited to share my latest song co-written by my good friend @sean_ono_lennnon,” James wrote on Instagram while announcing the collaboration.

He has a warm relationship with Nancy Shevell

James has also spoken positively about his father’s third wife, Nancy Shevell, whom Paul married in 2011.

“Nancy is great, she’s lovely and Dad’s happy,” he told The Irish Mirror in 2013.

James acknowledged that nobody could replace Linda, but said Shevell had become an important part of the family.

“It is difficult to replace Mum, but Nancy is beautiful and wonderful,” he said, adding that the family adored her and that she made Paul “very, very happy.”

James remains close to his father

The difficult years between Paul and James now appear far removed from their current relationship.

In February 2026, James attended the premiere of his father’s documentary Man on the Run, which explores Paul’s life following the breakup of The Beatles and his relationship with Linda.

Afterward, James reflected on the experience on Instagram.

“It was a memorable evening last night as I had an opportunity to watch Dad’s new documentary ‘Man On The Run’,” he wrote. “His life following the breakup of The Beatles and the love he shared with Mum.”

Paul, meanwhile, has spoken about how his relationship with all of his children has evolved as they have grown older.

“As far as being a dad is concerned, I’ve always just tried to give my kids a bit of guidance if they seem to need it — but that was mainly when they were younger,” he said in 2023.

“Now that they are older, they’re guiding me.”

For James, the journey from growing up as Paul McCartney’s only son to establishing his own identity has not always been straightforward. But after periods of grief and distance, father and son ultimately rebuilt a relationship James now describes in the simplest terms: Paul is both his dad and his best friend.
