Mississippi singer Elsie delivered one of the most emotional auditions of the latest America’s Got Talent episode, earning comparisons to Beyoncé and advancing to the next round despite sharply divided opinions over her original song.
The 32 year old mother took the AGT stage after sharing that she had spent years putting her own musical ambitions on hold to support her husband’s career.
Now ready to pursue her own dream, Elsie performed “Forgiveless,” an original soul blues song featuring lyrics about forgiveness, healing and moving forward.
Her confident performance, complete with a driving clap along rhythm, immediately drew cheers from the audience. Dressed in a white cowboy hat, cowboy boots and long braids, Elsie also caught the attention of Sofía Vergara, who said the singer reminded her of Beyoncé.
While the audience embraced the performance, the judges were less united.
Mel B praised Elsie’s voice, calling it “amazing,” but felt the original song failed to showcase just how powerful her vocals really are.
“I think your voice is so much bigger and better than what you just showed us,” Mel B said, encouraging the emotional contestant to reveal more of her vocal range in future performances.
Howie Mandel agreed that Elsie had undeniable star quality from the moment she stepped onto the stage, but he believed the heavy backing track made it difficult to fully appreciate her voice.
Sofía Vergara shared a similar opinion.
Although she complimented Elsie’s appearance and vocal ability, she admitted she wasn’t sold on the song itself.
“I didn’t love the song, but I did love you,” Vergara said, drawing loud boos from the audience.
Simon Cowell, however, saw enormous potential.
The veteran judge told Elsie she possesses “everything it takes” to succeed in the competition, though he suggested she had overthought the performance.
According to Cowell, Elsie would shine even brighter if she allowed herself to be more spontaneous and emotionally vulnerable on stage.
“You have star potential,” he told her. “You have a glow about you.”
When voting time arrived, Howie remained unconvinced and cast the only no vote of the panel.
Simon, Sofía and Mel B all voted yes, sending Elsie through to the next round with three out of four votes.
Despite the mixed critiques, the audition established Elsie as one of Season 21’s most intriguing contestants, with the judges believing her biggest performance may still be ahead.
