“Viewers Didn’t See It Coming.” BBC’s Brilliantly Mischievous 6-Part Drama That Quietly Hooked Audiences With Wit, Danger, and Deception Has Officially Been Renewed—Confirming a Season 2 That Promises Even Sharper Twists
The BBC has announced that season two of Can You Keep a Secret? is officially on the way – and we can’t wait to see what happens next.
Starring Dawn French as the sneaky Debbie Fendon, the six-parter follows the fallout after Debbie’s husband, William (played by Mark Heap), is mistakenly pronounced dead. When Debbie spots an opportunity to protect her family and secure a life insurance payout, she grabs it with both devious hands.
It’s no real surprise that Can You Keep a Secret? has already been renewed for a second season. After first airing back in January, the show proved a huge hit with BBC viewers, attracting 5.3 million viewers for its series launch across 28 days.
Boasting a hilarious cast – including Dawn (The Vicar of Dibley), Mark (Friday Night Dinner) and Craig Roberts (22 Jump Street) – along with writer Simon Mayhew-Archer (This Country), the series has become the third biggest comedy launch on BBC iPlayer since 2024, according to the BBC. It currently sits behind Ludwig and Amandaland. Keep reading to find out more about Can You Keep a Secret? season two…
The synopsis continues: “However, William isn’t dead. Declared deceased by mistake, he’s hiding in the loft while they await the life insurance payout.
“The scheme shocks their high-strung son Harold (Craig Roberts), whose wife, Neha (Mandip Gill), is a local police officer. Just as the family begins to navigate this bizarre charade, Debbie drops another secret – one that could bring the whole family down.”
Viewers will be pleased to know that the new series will see the return of its main four stars: Dawn French as Debbie, Mark Heap as William, Craig Roberts as Harry and Mandip Gill as Neha.
In a statement to the BBC, Dawn said: “As chuffed as an actual chuff to hear that we have a second series! More chance for Debbie to get her bossy boots on and create further havoc… hooray.”
Meanwhile, creator and writer Simon said: “Making this series was a joyous experience. Comedy is a team game, and Dawn, Mark, Craig, Mandip and the whole cast and crew are dream collaborators.
“I love sitcoms and I want more of them on TV, so I am enormously grateful to everyone who has watched this show and taken the Fendons to their hearts. I hope our success will help even more comedy get made across the UK. It’s one of our national superpowers – and we need it!”
BBC director of comedy commissioning Jon Petrie added: “The response to Can You Keep a Secret? has been fantastic. Dawn French and the whole creative team have crafted a warm, mischievous comedy that clearly struck a chord with audiences. We’re delighted to bring it back for a second series and can’t wait to see even more secrets unravel.”
Can You Keep a Secret? season two begins filming in the West Country later this year.
