Who Stars In Doing Life?

Naomi Baker As Anika

Naomi Baker leads the film as Anika, a former prison officer and single mother trying to keep her life together.

Baker is still relatively early in her acting career, with credits including All American: Homecoming and A Lifeguard’s Obsession, as well as several short films.

Her character’s life takes an unexpected turn when she reconnects with someone from her past, setting the central relationship of the film in motion.

Doing Life

Jay Reeves As Carousel

Jay Reeves stars opposite Baker as Carousel, a former inmate whose life becomes intertwined with Anika’s.

Before Doing Life, Reeves was best known for playing Shawn Scott in the first season of The CW’s All American. He has also appeared in The Six Triple Eight, Nemesis, Safety and The Tax Collector.

Carousel’s connection with Anika is rooted in their shared history. He once saved her from a violent prison riot when she was working as a correctional officer, and their paths cross again after his release.Doing Life

Anika’s Family Adds Another Layer

Anika’s complicated relationship with Carousel is also examined through the people closest to her.

Karen Obilom plays Trina, one of Anika’s sisters and someone she can confide in about her growing bond with Carousel. Obilom is known for Games People Play, Doom Patrol, The Mill and House Party.

Tamberla Perry portrays Cathy, Anika’s mother, who becomes increasingly concerned about her daughter becoming involved with a convicted criminal. Perry’s previous credits include Brilliant Minds, They Cloned Tyrone, Boss, Death and Other Details and The Good Fight.

Jasmine Sargent plays Lisa, another of Anika’s sisters. Protective and outspoken, Lisa worries about the choices Anika is making and admits that her character may not always be easy for viewers to like. Sargent has appeared in Beauty in Black, House of Payne, GRITS, Judge Me Not and Coming Out.

Danielle Moné Truitt rounds out the main cast as Denise, a supportive member of Anika’s community. Truitt is known for Rebel, Deputy and her role as NYPD Sergeant Ayanna Bell in Law & Order: Organized Crime.

The wider cast also includes Cornell Young IV, Lucky Johnson, Cali Rae Benard and Marley Jade Benard.

A Story About Starting Over

Rather than focusing on a conventional romance, Doing Life builds its story around two people who are both searching for another chance.

Anika is trying to provide stability for her child while navigating the difficulties of life as a single mother. Carousel, meanwhile, is attempting to rebuild his future after prison.

Their unexpected connection forces the people around them to confront questions about trust, judgment and whether someone’s past should determine what comes next.

Doing Life

Netflix describes the film as an emotional drama in which a single mother and an incarcerated man form an unlikely bond through heartfelt letters, opening the door to redemption, hope and love.

With Naomi Baker and Jay Reeves at the centre, Doing Life has quickly emerged as one of Netflix’s notable new dramas following its October 2 debut.

Doing Life is now streaming on Netflix.
