Nicole Kidman Reflects on Life After Keith Urban Divorce as She Admits Her Future Looks Nothing Like She Once Imagined
Nicole Kidman is opening up about embracing uncertainty and learning to reshape her future following the end of her nearly two-decade marriage to Keith Urban.
The 59-year-old actress spoke candidly about entering an unexpected new phase of her life during an interview with British Vogue, describing the experience as a kind of “free falling” as she adjusts to circumstances she never anticipated.
Kidman filed for divorce from country superstar Urban in September 2025 after 19 years of marriage. Their divorce was finalized in January 2026, with the former couple sharing custody of daughters Sunday Rose, 18, and Faith Margaret, 15.
Despite the major change in their family, Kidman and Urban have largely avoided publicly discussing the breakup and appear to have maintained an amicable relationship. Keith wished Nicole a happy birthday on social media in June, while she later included him in a Father’s Day tribute.
Nicole Kidman Admits She Had Envisioned a Very Different Future
Kidman stopped short of revealing intimate details about the marriage ending, instead focusing on how the experience has changed the way she looks at life.
The Oscar winner explained that she has traditionally trusted emotion and instinct rather than analyzing every decision. That approach, she suggested, has become particularly important during a period when so much of her future feels uncertain.
“I lead with my heart,” Kidman explained, describing a philosophy that involves taking chances, making mistakes, recovering from failures and remaining receptive to love and new possibilities.
But she also acknowledged that reaching this point has required accepting a painful reality: this wasn’t the life she had pictured for herself.
“I had a different view of what my life was going to be, but this is what it is now,” she said.
For Kidman, the lesson has been recognizing that even carefully constructed plans can disappear without warning. Rather than continuing to measure her present against the future she once imagined, she is trying to adapt to the one now in front of her.
“The future, it’s completely unknown to me right now,” she admitted.
Choosing Hope During a Vulnerable Period
That uncertainty hasn’t always been easy.
Kidman revealed there was a period when she felt “very fearful and deeply vulnerable,” leaving her with a choice between retreating from what had happened or continuing forward.
She ultimately chose the latter.
Instead of allowing fear to determine what comes next, Kidman said she is approaching this new chapter with “an enormous amount of hope.”
That resilience is partly rooted in lessons she learned from the strong women around her, including her mother and female mentors who taught her that life will not always unfold fairly.
Their advice helped her understand that disappointment, mistakes and even humiliating experiences don’t have to define what follows.
“I know my character. I know my talent. I know who I am,” Kidman said.
It’s a striking declaration at a moment when another major part of her identity and personal life has changed.
Work Remains a Major Focus
While her personal future may feel uncertain, Kidman’s professional schedule remains packed.
She is preparing for the release of Practical Magic 2, reuniting with Sandra Bullock for the highly anticipated sequel, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters on September 11.
Kidman is also continuing her work on Taylor Sheridan’s Lioness, where she serves as both a star and executive producer. The show’s third season premiered August 2.
For now, Kidman isn’t pretending to know exactly what the next chapter will look like.
After imagining one future for years and watching life take an entirely different direction, she appears determined not to retreat from the uncertainty.
Instead, she’s adapting to it — keeping her heart open and moving forward without knowing exactly where it will lead.
