Gwen Stefani Surprises Blake Shelton’s Coastal Country Jam Crowd With “Don’t Speak” Before the Couple Share a Kiss Onstage
Blake Shelton’s first performance in Long Beach already had all the ingredients of a major festival headlining set. Then he started playing a familiar guitar riff — and suddenly the country show took a completely unexpected turn.
During his Saturday, September 16, 2023 appearance at Coastal Country Jam at Marina Green Park in Long Beach, California, Shelton surprised the crowd by welcoming his wife, Gwen Stefani, to the stage. Instead of simply joining him for one of their country collaborations, Stefani reached back into her No Doubt catalog for “Don’t Speak.”
The surprise appearance became one of the most memorable moments of the festival’s opening night.

Blake Shelton Fooled the Crowd Before Gwen Appeared
Shelton didn’t immediately reveal what he had planned.
He began strumming the recognizable opening of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama,” briefly making it appear as though a Southern rock cover was coming next.
But the musical tease quickly shifted.
The familiar introduction to No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak” emerged instead, setting up the surprise waiting just offstage.
Then Shelton announced the special guest.
“You know I had to bring out the queen, Gwen Stefani, for this night,” he told the audience.
Stefani walked onto the stage wearing an animal-print mini skirt as the Long Beach crowd erupted.
For a festival built around country music, hearing one of the defining alternative-pop songs of the 1990s suddenly ring out across Marina Green Park made for an unusual crossover moment.

Thousands of Country Fans Sang “Don’t Speak” With Gwen Stefani
Once Stefani took control of the microphone, the surprise quickly turned into a huge audience singalong.
“Don’t Speak,” released by No Doubt during Stefani’s years as the band’s frontwoman, remains one of the group’s signature recordings. The song spent 16 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Radio Songs chart, then known as Hot 100 Airplay.
At Coastal Country Jam, its familiarity was obvious.
Fans enthusiastically sang along with Stefani, particularly during the chorus, while Shelton accompanied his wife onstage. What had started with a playful piece of “Sweet Home Alabama” had suddenly transformed into a full-scale No Doubt moment in the middle of a country festival.
Stefani’s appearance also carried a hometown connection. She grew up in Anaheim, California, making the Southern California performance something of a return to familiar territory.

Blake Proudly Introduced His Wife to the Crowd
After “Don’t Speak,” Shelton couldn’t resist having a little fun.
“Just in case you don’t know, this is Gwen Stefani everybody,” he joked.
But one song wasn’t enough.
Rather than immediately leaving the stage, Stefani stayed with Shelton for two songs that belonged to their story as a couple: “Nobody But You” and “Happy Anywhere.”
The performances shifted the mood from the nostalgic intensity of “Don’t Speak” to the romantic country-pop sound Shelton and Stefani have developed together.
Both collaborations had already proved successful well beyond their live performances. “Nobody But You” and “Happy Anywhere” each reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart.
On this night, however, chart positions mattered far less than the chemistry between the two performers.
The married couple exchanged glances throughout the songs, bringing an unmistakably personal element to a set being watched by thousands of festivalgoers.

A Kiss Ended Gwen’s Surprise Appearance
Once the couple finished their duets, they shared a kiss onstage.
Stefani then made her exit while Shelton sent her off with another affectionate introduction, referring to her as his wife before continuing with the remainder of his headlining show.
It was a brief interruption to Shelton’s solo set, but one that completely changed the energy of the evening.
Shelton continued with songs from his own catalog, including fan favorites such as “Sangria,” “Honey Bee” and “God’s Country.” The appearance marked his first performance in Long Beach.
Yet the image many fans carried away from the night was Shelton standing alongside Stefani as a country festival crowd loudly sang a No Doubt classic back at them.
Coastal Country Jam Brought Country Music Back to Long Beach
The surprise unfolded during the first day of the two-day Coastal Country Jam, held September 16 and 17 at Marina Green Park.
Shelton and Tim McGraw served as headliners across the weekend, while the broader lineup included Brooks & Dunn, Maren Morris, Dustin Lynch, Tyler Hubbard, Scotty McCreery, MacKenzie Porter, Jameson Rodgers and other country performers.
The 2023 edition also represented Coastal Country Jam’s return after a four-year absence, bringing the festival to its new Long Beach location.
Music was only part of the attraction. Festivalgoers could also take part in mechanical bull riding, cornhole and Honky Tonk dance classes, adding to the beachside country-party atmosphere.
But Shelton had something on his setlist that no festival schedule could reveal.
Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani Turned Two Musical Worlds Into One
Part of what made the surprise so effective was the contrast.
Shelton has spent decades firmly associated with country music. Stefani became famous as the unmistakable voice and frontwoman of No Doubt before establishing a successful solo pop career.
On paper, “Don’t Speak” appearing in the middle of a Blake Shelton country festival set might seem like an unlikely combination.
Onstage, it worked.
Shelton’s opening fake-out with “Sweet Home Alabama,” Stefani’s unexpected entrance and the immediate recognition from thousands of fans turned the performance into something bigger than a straightforward guest appearance.
Then came “Nobody But You” and “Happy Anywhere,” songs representing the musical world the couple created together.
By the time Stefani left the stage, fans had watched three very different sides of their story: the No Doubt classic that helped make her a star, the country collaborations they recorded together, and the real-life affection behind them.
One surprise guest had briefly turned Blake Shelton’s country headlining show into a celebration of both of their musical lives — capped off with a kiss before Shelton returned to the rest of his set.
