On Saturday, August 22, Underwood joined Travis at the Grand Ole Opry as the country icon approaches the 40th anniversary of his membership. Travis officially joined the Opry on December 20, 1986, when he was just 27 years old.
The August 22 Opry lineup featured Underwood alongside Travis, James Dupré, Charles Esten, T. Graham Brown, John Conlee, Jenna Davis, Wyatt McCubbin and others.
But for Carrie and Randy, the evening carried a history that stretched far beyond one performance.

Standing onstage in a pink gown, Underwood turned her attention directly to Travis and reflected on what has made him so beloved throughout his career.
“We celebrate you and your legacy, your incredible talent,” Underwood told him. “But anybody that knows you knows you are great because of your heart.”
The words carried particular meaning coming from Underwood.
Long before she became one of country music’s biggest stars, she was a young fan listening to Randy Travis. She has recalled how her sister owned one of his cassette tapes — and how quickly it essentially became Carrie’s after she heard that unmistakable traditional country voice.
Years later, she would meet the singer she had admired growing up.

Underwood won American Idol in 2005, beginning a remarkable rise in country music.
Three years later, another milestone arrived.
During an Opry appearance in 2008, Underwood was onstage when Travis unexpectedly appeared behind her. As the audience reacted, she turned around and realized one of her musical heroes was standing there.
Travis had come with an important question: he was inviting her to become the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry.
The invitation was especially meaningful considering how deeply his music had influenced her.

Before singing, she remembered discovering his music as a child and admitted that she cried when she first met him years later.

As “Forever and Ever, Amen” reached its conclusion, Underwood stepped away from the stage and walked toward Travis in the audience.
She held the microphone toward him.
Travis delivered the song’s final “Amen.”
The audience responded with cheers and a standing ovation as Underwood embraced the country legend.
