Mark Harmon’s Gibbs Returns in ‘NCIS: Origins’ Season 3 as His Peaceful Retirement Comes Crashing Down

Mark Harmon is stepping back into the role of Leroy Jethro Gibbs, and the first trailer for NCIS: Origins Season 3 suggests his quiet life in Alaska is about to be disrupted by unfinished business from his past.

After previously serving primarily as the narrator of the prequel, Harmon will appear onscreen throughout the new season as the present-day Gibbs. His storyline will be tied to a mystery connected to his experiences decades earlier, creating a direct link between the older Gibbs and the younger version played by Austin Stowell. CBS confirms that Harmon will appear in all episodes of Season 3.

“I came to Alaska to find peace,” Gibbs says in the trailer. “But ghosts from my past found me. I know now peace never lasts.”

Those ghosts appear to lead back to a case from 1992 — one that Gibbs says came with a price he is still paying 34 years later.

Meanwhile, the younger Gibbs faces his own problems, from the aftermath of his kiss with Lala to a kidnapped team member and the disturbing possibility of a Russian spy operating within NCIS.

Gibbs’ Alaska retirement is no longer peaceful

Season 3 continues to move between two periods of Gibbs’ life.

In the present day, Harmon’s older Gibbs has been living quietly in Alaska. But the new trailer makes clear that his retirement will not last.

He packs his belongings, picks up his rifle and tells his dog, “Time to get to work.”

The footage then shows Gibbs leaving Alaska and returning to what appears to be his former office in Washington, D.C.

“This was the case that started it all,” Gibbs says. “Every case came at a price, and 34 years later, I’d be paying mine.”

For NCIS: Origins, the shift is significant. Instead of Harmon simply narrating Austin Stowell’s story from the past, Season 3 can now show how those earlier events continue to affect the man Gibbs eventually becomes.

The aftermath of Gibbs and Lala’s kiss

Back in 1992, the long-awaited kiss between young Gibbs and Cecilia “Lala” Dominguez is creating an entirely different kind of tension.

Austin Stowell and Mariel Molino return as Gibbs and Lala, and the trailer immediately teases what happened after their Season 2 finale moment.

In one scene, Gibbs appears with buttons missing from his shirt.

“Why do you wear so many shirts?” Lala asks.

The trailer shows both the build-up to their intimate moment and the aftermath, offering an unusually playful glimpse of a character who is normally known for keeping his emotions guarded.

But whatever is developing between Gibbs and Lala is quickly overshadowed by a much more serious threat facing their team.

Randy returns with a disturbing warning

Caleb Foote’s Randy is seen after being kidnapped, and he looks visibly shaken by what he has endured.

His warning is even more alarming:

“Someone at NCIS is a Russian spy.”

If Randy is telling the truth, the danger extends far beyond the people responsible for his kidnapping. The team could be dealing with a threat from inside the organization itself.

The Season 3 premiere, titled “Don’t You Forget About Me,” will follow the 1992 team as they race to rescue Randy while Gibbs and Lala deal with the consequences of their kiss.

Lala’s story may be connected to Gibbs’ present

Lala has become an increasingly important part of NCIS: Origins, particularly because viewers of the original NCIS already know where Gibbs’ life eventually leads.

The prequel has been filling in parts of his early career and personal history that were previously left unexplored. Season 3 now appears ready to connect those past events directly to the present-day storyline.

“I know now Lala’s story isn’t hers alone,” Harmon’s Gibbs says. “It’s ours.”

He follows that with another intriguing line:

“Turns out, the final chapter is still being written.”

Exactly how Lala’s story in 1992 connects to Gibbs decades later remains one of the season’s central mysteries. What is clear is that the present-day storyline gives the series a way to explore those consequences rather than leaving older Gibbs solely in the role of narrator.

Another familiar face returns in the present

Harmon will not be the only familiar character appearing in the contemporary timeline.

The trailer also reveals Bobby Moynihan returning as an older version of Woody, placing another character from the prequel alongside Gibbs decades after the events of the 1992 storyline.

Together with Gibbs’ return to the D.C. office, the appearance suggests that the old case will force him to confront more than memories from his early career.

For longtime NCIS fans, seeing Harmon physically return as Gibbs is likely to be one of Season 3’s biggest attractions.
