The 1% Club Eliminates 15 Contestants After Tricky Letter Puzzle – Could You Solve It in 30 Seconds?

Fifteen contestants were eliminated from The 1% Club after failing to crack a seemingly straightforward question about the alphabet, proving that even familiar words can become tricky under pressure.

Hosted by Lee Mack, the popular ITV quiz challenges 100 contestants to put their logic and common sense to the test, with players gradually eliminated as the questions become more difficult. In this episode, a 70% question proved too challenging for 15 participants, who failed to identify the correct answer within the 30-second time limit.

Can You Spot the Most Frequent Letter?

The 15 Out game show set, with contestants seated in a circular tiered arrangement around a central stage.

Lee presented contestants with the sentence: “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.”

Although the sentence contains every letter of the alphabet, the challenge was to determine which letter appeared most frequently. Contestants had four options to choose from: A, E, I or O.

As the countdown began, players had just half a minute to examine the sentence and make their decisions.

Meanwhile, Lee kept the atmosphere light with a joke about the foxes in his neighbourhood.

“The foxes around my way are very cocky,” he quipped, before adding that they knocked on his door to remind him to put the bins out. He then joked that his wife was actually the one who took care of the bins.

When the timer ran out, the result was revealed: 15 contestants had answered incorrectly and were eliminated from the competition.

The Answer That Caught Players Out

The correct answer was O, which appeared four times in the sentence, in the words “brown”, “fox”, “over” and “dog”.

Many people might instinctively choose E because it is commonly regarded as the most frequently used letter in English. However, in this particular sentence, E appeared only three times, in “The”, “over” and “the”. A appeared once in “lazy”, while I appeared once in “quick”.

The puzzle demonstrated how a question that initially looks simple can become much harder when contestants have only seconds to work through the details.

Since launching three years ago, The 1% Club has become known for its brainteasers, which test reasoning rather than relying solely on general knowledge.

Other Puzzles That Have Stumped Contestants

Quiz question: Which letter appears most in "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog"? Options: A, E, I, O. Answer: O.

The letter challenge was not the only question to send large numbers of players home. In an earlier episode, 30 contestants were eliminated after struggling with a picture puzzle that asked whether an image contained more happy faces or sad faces.

Other challenging rounds have tested contestants’ ability to compare butterfly pictures and identify which images were symmetrical, recognise symbols that remained in the same order when read forwards or backwards, and calculate how many different combinations of four digits could be displayed on one hand.

Players have also been asked to decipher a secret-coded diary entry, count the eyes hidden within an image of letters, symbols and emojis, and solve a numerical grid puzzle involving compass directions.

In another round, 18 contestants were eliminated by an alphabet-based question. They had to identify which of four words — Unopenable, Understandable, Unquestionable and Undefineable — did not contain three consecutive letters of the alphabet.

Even puzzles involving food have proved challenging. One question required players to identify a common food whose letters had been rearranged into alphabetical order.

The variety of challenges is part of what makes the ITV quiz so demanding: contestants must think quickly, recognise patterns and avoid being caught out by details they might otherwise overlook.
