‘Jeopardy!’ Host Ken Jennings Takes Aim at Millionaire Tax Breaks in Washington Political Ad
Jeopardy! host Ken Jennings is using his public profile to oppose a Washington state ballot initiative that he says would benefit the wealthy at the expense of working families. In a political ad released ahead of the midterm elections, the millionaire game show host urges voters to reject Initiative 645, warning that it could deepen economic inequality and lead to major cuts to public schools.
Ken Jennings Urges Washington Voters to Reject Initiative 645

With the midterm elections approaching, Washington voters are weighing a range of proposals, including Initiative 645, which seeks to repeal a tax on household income exceeding $1 million and prohibit future state and local income taxes under the measure.
Jennings appears in an advertisement filmed in his home state, introducing himself with a familiar format: “I’m Ken Jennings, host of Jeopardy!, here with a pop quiz.”
He then challenges viewers to consider the initiative’s potential consequences.
“Did you know Initiative 645 would give millionaires and billionaires a thirteen-billion-dollar tax break, making Washington’s unfair tax system, where working families pay two times more than the wealthiest, even worse? Or that 645 would mean huge cuts to public schools?”
Jennings also points to opposition from teachers, nurses and small businesses before delivering his conclusion: “It doesn’t take a quiz show host to know that 645 is wrong for Washington. Vote NO.”
His position puts him at odds with an initiative backed by wealthy supporters, despite his own multimillionaire status.
What Would Initiative 645 Mean for Washington?
#WAPol: “I’m Ken Jennings, host of Jeopardy, here with a pop quiz. Did you know Initiative 645 would give millionaires and billionaires a $13B tax break … It doesn’t take a quiz show host to know 645 is wrong for Washington.”

Washington does not currently impose a state income tax, according to Deseret News. Under the tax proposal Jennings supports, households earning a combined $1 million or more would face a 9.9% tax beginning in January 2028.
The measure would affect approximately 20,000 households, representing less than 1% of the state’s households. According to Washington state Senate Democrats, the tax could generate $3.5 billion annually in revenue.
The ballot question is therefore a choice between allowing the proposed tax on high-income households to take effect and repealing it while prohibiting future income taxes covered by the initiative.
A “No” vote would preserve the path for the tax to be imposed, while a “Yes” vote would repeal it and establish the proposed restrictions on future income taxes.
Wealthy Donor Brian Heywood Backs the Initiative

One of Initiative 645’s prominent supporters is Brian Heywood, a farmer and multimillionaire hedge fund founder who is also its largest donor.
Heywood is backing two other measures on Washington’s ballot through the Wrong for Washington campaign. One would prohibit students defined as “biologically male” from participating in certain school athletic activities designated exclusively for female students. The other concerns the rights of parents and guardians of children attending public schools.
Jennings’ intervention has brought additional attention to the tax debate as voters consider these proposals ahead of the election.
Fans Praise Ken Jennings for Speaking Out
Jennings’ political message prompted a positive response from fans on Reddit, with several applauding his willingness to advocate for lower- and middle-income families.
“No wonder people think Ken Jennings is kinda hot, lol,” one user joked.
“Way to go, Ken. Awesome,” another wrote, while a third simply declared, “He’s the best.”
One fan offered a more personal endorsement: “I love Ken Jennings, always have. He’s a good guy, and it’s a pleasure to see someone so kind, brilliant, and witty succeed.”
Another summed up their reaction in just a few words: “Ken Jennings is a real one.”
The responses show how Jennings’ role on Jeopardy! has helped him build a following beyond the quiz show—and how his decision to speak out on a divisive political issue has resonated with some viewers.
